  3. To answer the OP, your original calculation seems about right. A wood burner runs best and most efficiently when run hot. Keeping it closed down for too long results in dirty glass and more likelihood of tar build up in flues. Too big a stove makes the room uncomfortable to be in. If you can find a calculator which takes into account size and type of windows, number of doors, etc. as well as Height, Depth & Width of your room you will get a more accurate idea of your needs. They are available online. Before choosing stove you need to know if you are in a smoke control zone, if you are, you will have to buy a stove which is approved by DEFRA for use there. Also, if you do not think that you will be able to source enough wood (or sawdust pellets) to run the stove you might need to look for one which will take a grate to enable you to burn coal/coke etc. When burning wood the fire needs to sit on a bed of ash, when burning coal the fire needs to be on a grate ( and you need to empty the ashpan before its full otherwise you burn the grate out quickly). As to makes, personally I would avoid the many Chinese imports which are on the market at the moment, there are a lot on ebay and with online suppliers, and their prices are tempting. A lot of the ones I’ve seen are poorly finished, a stove works well when you have control over its air intake from the designed inlets, when air is leaking in due to poor seals it will not perform well. That said I fitted one of these for a friend 3 years back and he is very happy with, it is not his main source of heat and just runs as back up in a study. I fitted a couple of Morso’s on a local farm recently, they let accommodation and already have 2 other Morso’s fitted, one is 20 years old and still going strong. They are good stoves and parts backup is good (another drawback to the cheaper imports) but they are costly. I like Charnwood stoves and intend to fit a Country 6 in our lounge this year. Charnwood are a family run company based on the Isle of Wight, what’s not to like. Their Country 4 might meet your requirements. To season wood, I have a lot coming from laying/coppicing our hedgerows, about 4” to 6” dia. I cut them to about 4 ft lengths then stack them in the open on pallets to keep them off the damp ground, and then put old corrugated iron sheets on top held down with rocks. You need the tops of your stacks covered but the sides open to the wind. After 2 winters seasoning, I cut the logs to length during dry weather and stack in the wood shed which has Yorkshire boarded sides, always allow air to get at your wood. If you are in doubt about your wood being seasoned a moisture meter is really handy and relatively cheap.
  4. No, its Les Reed's head, right.
  5. A question for those who signed the petition. When you buy/eat beef, cheese, butter, milk etc., do you check whether the country of origin allows the killing/culling of native species which are carriers of btb ?.
  6. The mrs and I spent 4 nights staying just outside Viterbo a month ago. Lovely city/town and generally untouched by tourist trade, only takes about a day to see the sights. A great place of an evening to have a meal, a wander and a gelato. Would recommend visiting 'Parco dei Mostri' about 12km NE at Bomarzo, basically a 16th century theme park comprising fantasy sculptures set in a wooded valley. Apparently a big favourite of Salavado Dali and wonderfully cool in hot weather. 'Civita di Bagnoregio' about 40 km north near Orvieto is worth visiting, an ancient hilltop village now nearly deserted, you get to it via a kilometre long footbridge, worth it for the views alone. We did a day trip to Tivoli, about 40km east of Rome, Villa d'este is beautiful. 16th century frescos inside, and landscaped, gardens absolutely crammed with spectacular fountains, water spouts and ponds outside. Villa Adriana (Hadrians's Villa) is nearby, the ruins of one the biggest roman villas. I hired a car from the airport and drove about 400kms, no problems, I find driving in Italy preferable to much of the U.K., the Italians may be mad particularly when overtaking, but seem more courteous and less aggressive. We drove to Tivoli going round Rome on their equivalent of the M25 at about 10.30, was not busy. The road surfaces leave a bit to be desired, even the main roads. The SS18 Rome-Viterbo was quite rough in places. Also slip roads do not have long acceleration/deceleration lanes, you suddenly find someone joining the carriageway in front of you at quite slow speed. About 10 years ago spent a couple of family holidays at Palinuro, on the coast about 15 miles from Sassano. Will type a bit about that area later if I get the chance.
  7. As gratifying as it is to see this thread turned into an appreciation of the good Captain, it may be distracting people from the original purpose. Maybe someone who is not so tight as me and has paid their dues could start a new thread where this discussion could continue. Maybe something along the lines of ‘Would Jose & Jos cut it if we reach the premier league next season or should we bid for Rockette Morton & Drumbo to keep things tight at the back’ or ‘Does sticking your horn over the microphone and playing random notes at speed qualify you as a) Genius, b) a suitable replacement for half-time entertainment, c) a more than adequate substitute for Guly if the diamond formation isn’t working?.
  8. 59 years old, born & grew up in Guildford, now livestock farmer in Teifi valley, West Wales. Dad grew up in Steventon and followed both Saints & Pompey when that was not a capital offence. He took me to my first game at the Dell 18th September 1965 vs Wolves, stood at front of chocco box, amazed by colours and noise. Tony Knapp back headed into own net after 30secs, 2-2 after 12 mins, 5-2 at half time, 9-3 after 60 mins and at end. Thought all football matches were like this and was hooked. Disabused by next match, 0-1 defeat by Huddersfield. First away match 5th February 1966 at Fratton Park, 5-2 win for Saints. My only real memory is that I was standing below pitch level and that the blue shirted players may have been cloven hoofed. Really enjoyed that promotion season, the explosion of relief at the late winner against Charlton in the run in, and the celebrations at Brisbane Road when promotion was almost guaranteed. Went to many home games plus matches in London throughout late 60’s/early 70’s til sex & drugs & rock and roll took over. Emigrated to God’s Own Country 1st May 1976, no radio in van, got to Severn Bridge to see Cup Final score on blackboard outside Tollbooth, a great start to a new life. Because of location and lifestyle do not get to many matches these days but have enjoyed standing on terraces at Ashton Gate and Ninian Park with my daughter and her partner, Brings back memories of watching football as it should be. Right, I off out to the lambing shed now to stick my hand up a ewes rear end,( for business not recreational purposes before you ask).
  9. For me it is Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels To be wanderin' I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way I promise to go under it. Although sometimes these appeal I'll find a favourite restaurant and eat there every day And at the nearby bowling alley I'll bowl my cares away Some days I'll order chicken, some days I'll order fish Some days I'll have piroshki's, that's a Polish dish And after bowling twenty frames, I'll sit and have a beer Perhaps I meet a pretty girl who is a barmaid there I'll get a job at a steak house, wash dishes, mob floors Yes, I know I won't get rich Memphis is the kind of town that won't feel like a trap Besides, I kind of like the way it sits there on the map I'm considering a move to Memphis, that's Memphis Tennessee It worked for Elvis Presley, why can't it work for me? The people in the restaurants there will all use forks and knives They won't take decongestions though for fear of getting hives or maybe well, the girls would turn the colour of avocado when he would drive down thier street in his el dorado he could walk down your street and girls could not resist to stare pablo picasso never got called an asshole not like you
