Where do we need to strengthen the most?
Baird of the land replied to sisi1992's topic in The Saints
Don't see us bringing in another CB, even if i feel including simeu in any list(to make 7) feels rather misleading. 5 first team CB is more than enough & we currently have 6. Main priority IMO should be adding real express pace in attacking area. We've only got Tella currently. Someone like Cornet(who can play up front or attacking mid) would be ideal but seems he might be going elsewhere Only other signing i could see us doing is a loan at FB. We need short term cover there. Think there would be concern if we end up relying on 2 of Djenepo/Valery/Ramsay/Ferry as cover for KWP & Perraud. -
That first goal was truly horrendous. Poor initially by midfielder (Lavia?), then Salisu completely switches off his man, with Bednarek fresh air swipe for the bonus.

Sekou Mara - Official: Signs for Strasbourg

I think the 'He's got some qualities on the ball' sounds a bit odd(& slightly negative). Probably just a 2nd language thing. -
That ship has sailed. Also we've currently got 6 CB's. Even if we manage to get shot of the poor Bednarek i wouldn't have thought we need more than 5.To be fair we seem to have got a very highly rated player in B-K. Just got to cross fingers and hope he, Salisu & Bazanu can do something together.

I can't see anything other than a Spurs win. If we're going 5 at the back, i really hope Lyanco starts over the poor Bednarek. I also can't say i'm a fan of the 1 up front (alongside 5 at the back). So i'd much rather see Adams & A.Armstrong lining up.

Thing i noticed in Spanish game where england were thoroughly outplayed for portions of the game and again today is the difference in finishing quality from England. Sweden with a glorious chance one on one with the keeper and the striker struggled to properly connect with the finish whereas both the stanway and mead finishes were drilled finishes.

Barcelona need to get players off their wage bill so they can get under spanish FFP(don't they?) Could be a reasonable ST loan. At least give JWP someone to aim at from set pieces.

Think we looked like we miht have improved at the back. In an attacking sense we are very weak and lack goals. It seems like we still have business to do in this area. The mid-season break may help as the one recent time we had one(Covid), ralph managed to get the team to finish the season on a high rather than his more common lose every game approach. I'll go optmistic and say 11th because the thought of another drab drip over the stay up line is too depressing for words.

3 CBs - pre season experiment or long term change?
Baird of the land replied to Dusic's topic in The Saints
For the odd specific game(to combat opposition) i think its fine. As the default formation i don't think it makes much sense. We end up looking very negative. -
An option to buy would also be something we would be unlikely get off City.
-
My first thought seeing that Delap link is where Sheff Utd paid 24M for a Brewster who has scored 3 goals in 2 seasons).
-
Seems to be sending a truly depressing message. Avoid risks at all costs approach. Attacking midfielders not to drive with the ball. Playing someone up front, completely out of position and creating zilch in an attacking sense is a success.
-
Guess we'll see what it looks like once our remaining purchases happen. Right now i'm not particularly enthused by seeming defensive approach. Armstrong may not be the answer but i highly doubt whoever we bring in would thrive in a system which appears to offer little support.

I very much prefer lyanco to bednarek. I’d be very happy if we can get a half decent fee for bednarek and get him out the door.

I did see this article recently on the campaign to increase representation in the women's game and wondered if on the same criteria they should be launching a white campaign for the men's team based on their levels of representation in the national team. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/62009679

Don't think Aribo is a terrible player but don't think he is what we need at 10.
-
I remember there being vocal unhappiness any time he went to take a throw in, which was funny as Pulis showed what a weapon it could be.
-
Good player for us during his peak. Goals really dried up post koeman but still a useful player 2 have round. Kept him 2 yrs too long really and it's definite right to part ways. Curious to see if he plays on. Wonder if he might head to Irish league for season like duff did.
-
I don't think 2 10's is very feasible. That would mean finding homes for 3 of our existing ones, who aren't likely to be very appealing to people.
-
Yeah i can understand it, money now and a good chance(with the current climate) that someone will pay big money for you if you don't make the immediate breakthrough at the big club. Very depressing though like so much about Premier league.

Romeo Lavia - Official: Signs for Not Liverpool
Baird of the land replied to Saint Garrett's topic in The Saints
In midfield we aren’t short of experience so I don’t really have much issue taking a pot shot on a high promise youngster. at the back i’m a bit more concerned about the balance in that regard. -

Sounds promising. If we can get the right young player, we've got a season in which to transition from Romeu to them. -
Would be disappointed to see him go. Thought there was definitely something in there. Wasn't consistent but there were definitely impressive games too.
