ladysaint Posted 26 October, 2009 Share Posted 26 October, 2009 Anyone else remember what year it was that we were due to play Orient (can remember it was on a Saturday) but the game was called off because I think the pitch was waterlogged. The reason I am asking is that I remember pulling up outside Brisbane Road to see someone from the club pinning a scrappy piece of paper on the main gate just saying “game off” and turned round and came back home again. This also happened to me once when we were playing Newcastle away, got all the way up there only to find the game called off, nothing wrong with the pitch but apparently the terracing and the steps were a hazard. With better transport links and communications nowadays it now seems a rare occurrence that games are called off after you have arrived. On another matter what time will people start queuing up tomorrow morning for tickets and how many people will be queuing.

We had won at Bristol City on the Friday and then played City at home on the Monday (Channon's debut). The Orient game was then played a month later as the penaltimate game of the promotion season. The Newcastle game could be the Feb 2001 game. It was eventually played midweek, live on Sky, during Stuart Gray's caretaker period. 1-1 Pahars. Shropshire Saint Posted 26 October, 2009 Share Posted 26 October, 2009 I am sure that it was our prmotion season in 1966. I remember getting to Waterloo station and seeing a sign telling us the match was off. Went to see Chelsea beat West Ham 6-2 instead. The match was rescheduled for a Monday night in early May and Terry Paine scored with a header which virtually guaranteed promotion. The previous saturday we had won 3-2 at Plymouth. We only needed to avoid a 6-0 defeat in our last game - away at the Champions Man City to get promotion. We drew 0-0. I remember it well !

I think this was the 1976/77 season around christmas time, I was on one of the two coaches that day, run at that time by Bernie Watts and Rolly the predecesor of the Foley coach. We went to watch Reading v Palace at Elm park instead that day where there was allsorts of fun and games in the ground before and during the game. The Orient game was finally played midweek later in the season when I'm pretty sure we won 3-

dellboypete Posted 26 October, 2009 Share Posted 26 October, 2009 Anyone go to the (thinking hard) 5th round league cup at White hart Lane - winter of about 70/71? Started snowing on the way up - the gates at WHL opened about 7 in a blizzard and the game was called off at about 7.15. About 50 saints fans then had a massive snowball fight in Trafalgar Square - got back to waterloo to discover most trains cancelled - got what happened to be the last train to soton which broke down at Basingstoke - finally pulled into soton central about 4am
Lets B Avenue Posted 26 October, 2009 Share Posted 26 October, 2009 I'm sure it was the league game in Jan 69. We had lost the league cup tie in Oct which I was at. The league game was then played in April and the tight yid bars tards gave out the original programme from January.

Badger Posted 26 October, 2009 Share Posted 26 October, 2009 I think this was the 1976/77 season around christmas time, That sounds about right.Infact I think it may have been on New Years Day. Two of us arrived to find Brisbane Road in a deserted street except for a line of coppers heading off duty to a minibus. They advised us that the nearest game was Tottenham v West Ham so we made our way there to see that friendly encounter, getting in just before half time. We found out at Fleet services that the game was off and turned up at Reading en masse in the middle of their end. Was funny at the beginning - the looks on the faces, but became "fretful" as the evening wore on. Memorable trip though
red&white56 Posted 27 October, 2009 Share Posted 27 October, 2009 anyone have any clues of pubs to use for saturday? There's some ideas on another thread - in the away section (i hope this link works!) http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=16739 However with 3000 + going I would say any pub is going to have a fair few Saints fans in it. I too drove up there with my brother only to find the match off so like you we went to Spurs v West Ham. Actually that is my only visit to White Hart Lane.
