hypochondriac Posted 21 November, 2009 Share Posted 21 November, 2009 Just wanted to start a thread on this because it's really bugging me. When we keep it on the floor and play football then we run rings around most teams. We were the better team in the first half. 2nd half we resorted to hoof ball which we have done on a number of occasions this season. The same thing happened against Brighton. When we played it along the floor we created chances against them and it all went tits up when we went for the hoof again. I wish we would stop it and just keep it on the floor. Norwich were a lot better at keeping the ball than us and stretching the play and I just wish we would play to our strengths.
benjii Posted 21 November, 2009 Share Posted 21 November, 2009 I agree but don't think that reflects our play today at all. Against Charlton and Brighton I agree, we were one dimensional, but today we used it pretty well.
hypochondriac Posted 21 November, 2009 Author Share Posted 21 November, 2009 Don't think that's true today at all. Against Charlton and Brighton I agree but today we used it pretty well. That's sort of my point. When we got it down first half and towards the end of the second we did very well with it. It was the 20-30 minute bit in the 2nd half that I was bothered about. Quite often we lost possession by just booting it out of play or booting it forwards rather than building up the play. I admit it was worse against Brighton but it's frustrating to see us resort to that tactic when I know we can play some really good stuff.
corsacar saint Posted 21 November, 2009 Share Posted 21 November, 2009 Agree, we can take sides apart, when we keep the ball on the deck. Some of the one touch in and around the oppositions penalty box is superb.

We are wasting possession by hoofing and clearing up the pitch...unless Antonio can be put in a position to chase a hoof in the centre of the midfield from time to time it's pointless. Frustratingly CCC/League 1. PASS IT TO FEET AND SPEED UP YOUR MOVEMENT.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 21 November, 2009 Share Posted 21 November, 2009 It starts from the back , Kelvin hardly ever throws the ball out for our players to run with and lets face it neither David Connolly or Adam Lallana are going to win many headers are they . There's a chap who sits behind me every game who's only comment on football is to repeatedly shout "keep it on the ground" at full volume every time the ball is airborne - I'm starting to think he might be right . Spudders Posted 21 November, 2009 Share Posted 21 November, 2009 I never understand why when Kelvin takes a goal kick, he just boots it up the field? Surely every time he does that it's 50/50 as to if we get the ball or the opposition gets it. Surely he'd be better off with a short pass to a defender, who in turn kicks it on, etc, etc (at least we have a better chance of keeping posession). I'm clueless at tac-tics but even I can see that his kicks up the middle are a gamble each time.

Rebel Posted 21 November, 2009 Share Posted 21 November, 2009 Kelvin's distribution of the ball is bl**dy awful! His kicking of the ball is terrible - he make's a big show of it but then just hoofs it up the field to nowhere never does it quickly either! and he hardly ever throws it out - or plays the short ball to a full back we put ourselves under pressure by giving the ball away - instead of building from the back Harding and James are part of the problem as they don't make themselves available for the short ball though Murty did when he came on and we actually started to pass the ball from the back - all be it a little bit

I'm not the bloke who sits behind you as I can't be there every game but I shout myself hoarse every time I go(including yesterday) saying the same thing "keep it on the ground". We are a very good team when we play football on the ground.Yesterday every time the ball was punted up field back it came because nobody won a header. If we played it on the ground we would have won , as they couldnt cope with Lallana & Connolly. WealdSaint Posted 22 November, 2009 Share Posted 22 November, 2009 (edited) I think that one of the reasons we were so under the cosh at the start of the 2nd half was that everytime we got the ball back in our own half we went for the 50/50 long ball. We did'nt get any meaningful possession and Norwich got back into the game. Edited 22 November, 2009 by WealdSaint

Didn't see yesterdays game, but in general Kelvin's kicks are pretty accurate, and taken quickly when required. I would agree that we should keep it on the floor more and pass it up the pitch though.
