Joesaint Posted 29 November, 2009 Share Posted 29 November, 2009 I remember a consortium was interested in buying this to keep in Southampton or something but was beaten to it by the Dubai lot, fair play. I was just reading in the Times that they may need to now sell it does it seem realistic at all that this consortium may still be interested? Does anyone know who they were or if it were just a bit o gossip? And what are the thought of anyone on here? PS would love it here but have to say not holding my breath! PPS here is the Times link http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/markets/the_gulf/article6936251.ece
St Landrew Posted 29 November, 2009 Share Posted 29 November, 2009 Setting aside the Dubai-can't-meet-its-interest-payments issue; the sale of the QE2 was first mentioned sometime back in the summer. There was talk of making it a hotel in Southampton. In a sense, it's not a stupid idea either. S.C.C seems to think hotels are the thing, so why not an iconic one..? Just don't keep the bugger in the water. Do an HMS Victory job on it.
Badger Posted 29 November, 2009 Share Posted 29 November, 2009 How much was the QE2 when sold originally ?
ericofarabia Posted 29 November, 2009 Share Posted 29 November, 2009 Over the summer there was a lot of talk about it going to South africa for The World Cup period as atourist attraction at cape Town. http://business.maktoob.com/20090000008139/QE2_to_sail_for_Cape_Town_Nakheel_confirms/Article.htm

Nakheel paid $100mil for it. Should be able to pick it up for $10mil in their liquidation auction next month . I've got my sights on one of them "The World" Islands or DP World's nice new Golf Course - should be able to pick one of them up for the 7 dirhams I found down the back of my sofa earlier this year. Does this mean you recon there is a chance of it coming back to southampton or not? I understand the cost of buying is not the main expence, its the up-keep. I don't know bu**er all about the sort of money needed but if in southampton I wonder if it would be good business? Hopefully yes.
WestSaint Posted 29 November, 2009 Share Posted 29 November, 2009 I think the ship should be permanently moored in Southampton and should never have been sold. The Council are always looking for ways of promoting the city and are currently considering a smaller ship. QE2 however is an icon and as a very large part of Southampton heritage should stay here on a permanent basis

Hopefully yes. It appears very likely that it will have to be sold. Nakheel (and to an extent Dubai World) made a series of "investments based on ego". They will have to have a fire sale of some "tokens" of their "stupidity" which will be forced on them as part of the bail out. Forcing them to sell the QE2 at a huge loss will be the perfect "spanking" that the impetuous child needs. So, yes it is likely to be sold, yes it is likely to go cheaply, but I expect some casino in Macau will snap it up, but it WOULD be great if it could be taken back home
RedAndWhite91 Posted 29 November, 2009 Share Posted 29 November, 2009 Bring her home, she should have never have been allowed to leave. Time for Southampton City Council to take real action in promoting the city, and bringing back the QE2 would be a good move.
spyinthesky Posted 29 November, 2009 Share Posted 29 November, 2009 'Fraid very little chance of QE2 returning here 1. Previous local 'consortium' were well meaning but not well heeled 2. Where would the ship go? ABP would be reluctant to offer up a berth unless the price was high enough. 3. The ship would rust quite quickly in our damp climate and would need regular maintenance including Dry Docking (probably in Germany) 4. City Council would be supportive, in principle, but no money to chuck at the possibility 5. All Heritage Funding options etc have been diverted to the Olympics in London
