Matthew Le God Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 Completely pointless and will make no difference If anything is going on with respect to a Southampton bid(if not too late already) it will go on behind the scenes. Not in a million years will the FA pay any attention to a facebook group.
Joesaint Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 Completely pointless and will make no difference If anything is going on with respect to a Southampton bid(if not too late already) it will go on behind the scenes. Not in a million years will the FA pay any attention to a facebook group. Well the bloke that started it sent us all a message; "there's 26,000 on the Southampton Network and over 6000 in the Saints related supporters groups. Surely a few of these would like Southampton to host some 2018 Worlds Cup matches at St Mary's. So forward on the group page to anyone you know who might agree with us and I'll put out a press release about the group's support when we reach the 500 mark (by the end of the week would be great). I heard that John Motson is a bid vice-president and am trying to lock down an email for him that we could all send a plea to. I'll also have a look into David Beckham's contact details to see if we can get a message of support from him. We have A FORTNIGHT before the FA makes a decision on which cities will be attached to their final bid offered to FIFA. Let's give it a go" Must be worth a go even if pointless or slim chance. Matthew Le God Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 Must be worth a go even if pointless or slim chance. I wouldn't even call it a slim chance. The FA won't even be aware of this campaign and if they were wouldn't take any notice. Don't you think "most" fans of every bidding city want their city to win the bid? Do you not think the FA are aware of this? Bids aren't won on fans signing petitions, they are based on city councils working with clubs to put together a well thought out proposal meeting the 93 points required from bidding cities on the FA's list. I have a feeling Saints are still trying to do something behind the scenes due to the local press coverage and interest in the story not being denied. Nicole Cortese expressed an interest at the BBC fan forum which showed they are interested and the comments from people at Pompey and Soton council were encouraging. However facebook groups will be completely irrelevant in the big scheme of how an organization like the FA works. It really does have a 0% chance of making a difference. Don't think I don't want Southampton to host the world cup, I'd love them to. However if anything is going to happen let Nicole and the city council do their stuff if the FA allows. So no one do nothing, ever. What if the Tolepuddle Martyrs, the Suffragettes had the same mentality? Where would we be? Accepted, it's up to the SCC & SFC to put in the bid but why not let them & the FA know there's a groundswell of support from fans & citizens. Matthew Le God Posted 3 December, 2009 Share Posted 3 December, 2009 (edited) So no one do nothing, ever. What if the Tolepuddle Martyrs, the Suffragettes had the same mentality? Where would we be? Accepted, it's up to the SCC & SFC to put in the bid but why not let them & the FA know there's a groundswell of support from fans & citizens. I didn't say do nothing, I said if anything will happen on this front the only people that will make a difference is the council and club putting forward a good case and proposal. Comparing it to the Tolpuddle Martyrs and the Suffragettes is laughable really. I doubt a facebook group would have done their cause any good either. A Southampton 2018 bid doesn't need direct action form the people, it needs those in a position of influence and power to do something. If anything happens in the next 2 weeks it will only come due to the city council and Nicole Cortese having talks with the FA. As I said before the FA would be fully aware that every one of the current 15 cities has public support in their regions. Its obvious that would be the case. If they were even made aware of this Saints group which I doubt they ever will be, what would a facebook tell them that they didn't already know? The FA is concerned with the bids from the cities meeting the criteria needed. It is a given that every one of the bidding cities has support from the majority of the community. Does anyone recognise tongue in cheek remarks round here? Of course facebook doesn't change things by itself but it can help spread the word & don't be too sure that the FA won't get to hear about it. 500 members in 3 days isn't a bad little gang added to that Royston Smith is in fact in touch with the group & I think you'll find there is some use for the group. Can I just ask why you bother spending time designing prospective kits and badges for our 125th (love the sash suggestion by the way). Bit of fun or do you genuinely believe you're going to be snapped up by Umbro? Thought not. So rather than getting all snotty about facebook, celebrate the fact so many are for it. The9 Posted 3 December, 2009 Share Posted 3 December, 2009 There is no Facebook Southampton network so I don't know where he's getting his figures from. It won't matter much in a week or two anyway, as they're removing networks altogether, which should please the idiots who don't understand Facebook networks and get sacked as a result. krissyboy31 Posted 3 December, 2009 Share Posted 3 December, 2009 Membership gone up from just over 600 to over 700 in a hour this morning. It won't have much influence in the grand scheme of things but anything that can add weight to the argument has got to be worth it (an online petition, if you like). If you're for it, join the group I say!!

It's a group requesting a Southampton network because "we" don't want to be affiliated to the one that is available. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2402584303 http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2251578890

They may as well claim they have a petition with 6 billion unique names on it for all the truth that's involved in that claim. Anyway, a group requesting a network will be an anachronism within a month as there will be no more networks on Facebook.

It's because anyone from the Southampton area has "(Portsmouth)" tagged after their name. I'm lucky because I'm not in a facebook network area but I sure as hell wouldn't want that tagged to my name!! I'll use Daren W as an example. He started many of the Saints groups on facebook but under group creator he is Daren Wheeler (Portsmouth). Bugger that!!!

Matthew Le God Posted 3 December, 2009 Share Posted 3 December, 2009 Plymouth 5,000 members http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=123143047127&ref=nf Bristol 11,000 http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=95912219510&ref=search&sid=500257548.3158205237..1 Southampton's at 700 and in the need of alot more in the next 13 days if the FA based decisions on this. Which we are lucky we don't because Saints are miles behind showing the level of support these others have. Many of the other cities don't have a facebook group at all(or one with only a couple of hundred in it, does this mean the FA will reject them cos they don't have enough gulible faceble user fans?) Not that the FA would care anyway
theyin Posted 3 December, 2009 Share Posted 3 December, 2009 MLG you really are a numpty aren't you? Christ alive, it's a bit of fun you miserable old g1t. Personally I think a 1000 members in a few days is quite astounding and though you dismiss facebook, I think when/if Royston Smith & co do in to the FA, they could well point to the amount of support for the idea as shown by the numbers in the group. Get on board Scrooge
