Colinjb Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 (edited) It is fantastic to have us linked to so many players this window, but on the whole they seem to be central players and we have so far not been linked to any wingers or wide players that we seemingly quite urgently need. Particularly a Left winger and Right back. So, with us after 2 centre backs (1 obtained) and 2 central midfielders (still only 'allegeded') then it could indicate we are focusing on strengthening the middle of the park and there can be only two explanations for this. 1) That is seen as the first priority and there is still time in the transfer window to get a RB and LM in. 2) We are adjusting our system to cater for these new signings. Could a formation along the lines of this be something we see in the future?: -------------------- Davis --------------------- ------- Fonté ------ Jaidi -------- Ward -------- James ---------------------------------- Harding ----------------- Schneiderlin ------------------- ----- Stock ----------------------- Danns ------ ---------- Lambert ---------- Connolly ---------- As for other players.... Antonio, offers a switch to 4-4-2 if needed? Lallana, can provide a support striker of another wide option for 4-4-2? Waigo, Scary quick striker still and can be a foil for Lambert? Hammond, Straight swap for any midfielder? Edited 11 January, 2010 by Colinjb

SuperMikey Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 Lallana at LWB is an interesting thought, but i'd find it hard to believe that Pardew would drop Harding. Also, i'm not sure that 5-3-2 is Pardew's formation, I think that's too conservative for him. The way I see it, 4-5-1 is our defensive formation and 4-4-2 is our attacking formation. Seems to have worked alright so far!

Switching between them during games. 442 Davis Murty/James Ward/Jaidi Fonte Harding Antonio/Danns Schniederlin/Hammond/Stock Lallana (2 of 3) Connolly/Waigo Lambert 451 Davis Murty/James Ward/Jaidi Fonte Harding Schneiderlin Hammond Stock Antonio/Danns Lallana/Waigo Lambert Edited 11 January, 2010 by Matthew Le God
ottery st mary Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 There will be rotation ..particularly regarding Jaidi and Connolly. (some games even the three at the back) Fonte can also play midfield anchor in front of Jaidi and Ward (if it is on) Harding definitely Left Full back or W fb..Murty when fit RB cover by James and the emerging Argent. Lallana, Danns, Stock, Hammond, Spiderman, James, Gobern.....Some suspensions/injuries and Spiderman used sensibly etc. (if Danns and Stock arrive) Lambert and Connolly...Waigo and Antonio..covering up front and used wide etc....I still rate Paterson to cover as well. A bid for a new RB should surely follow later in the window. Also, I always had Danns down as a more central player, does his playing history involve him playing on the right? Matthew Le God Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 Also, I always had Danns down as a more central player, does his playing history involve him playing on the right? I put Danns out right in my formation as Hammond/Schneiderlin/Stock would start in the middle. Danns has played wide in the past, think he is central atm for Palace. Pardew doesn't strike me as the type of manager to take a player on to work outside of his most comfortable position, if we do sign both Danns and Stock I would feel its because Pardew will think they are better then what we have in that position or will supply depth. I wouldn't expect one of them to be shifted out wide.

Pretty sure Danns is playing on the right for CP at the moment. I would also guess Waigo on the right in 451 is the more likely, as his attacking instincts would be more suited to that formation than Danns. I wouldn't expect one of them to be shifted out wide. Pardew wouldn't drop Hammond(his captain) or Morgan much. Pardew will likely stick with his 442 and 451 tactics switching between the two. The 451 allows all 3(Stock/Hammond/Schneiderlin) to play and gives Connolly a rest. Danns is very comfortable out wide. At just 5 foot 9 I think he is too small to play in a Pardew type central role. Andy_Porter Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 ---------- Davis James - Jaidi - Fonte - Harding ---------- Stock -- Hammond ---- Morgan ---------- Lallana --- Connolly ---- Lambert Can't see us doing it too often but it would probably work. I can't really see us playing anything other than 4-5-1 or 4-4-2, it will just be a case of having more and better cover if we sigh Danns, Ward and Stock. The actual formation won't work or it won't work because of the players in the formation? Works fine for plenty of other teams - Chelsea for example, Norwich in our league play a similar formation. Plenty of teams play without any width.
Legod Third Coming Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 Pardew confirmed on Solent many games ago after we beat MK Dons that he has used 2 systems his whole career and he won't change that. To me they are a sort if 4-5-1 and a straight 4-4-2. And that's your lot!

Andy_Porter Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 Would you want Harding and James exposed with no player helping them infront? We could go on all day answering questions with questions... Obviously the formation requires a bit of work so the full backs don't get doubled up on, it's not as easy as just telling a wide midfielder to track back. That's why I said it probably won't happen, not at this stage of the season anyway.

Something I can easily seeing go tit's up in a short space of time. I thought Tranmere's full backs were pretty impressive for this league, a lot of pace. Pardew has been trying to move away from the successful 4-1-4-1 with Wooton without the players to make it work. I hope we now have the players to make what ever system he wants to play work, because he has certainly wasted points without them.
Red And White Barmy Army Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 I think the diamond is an interesting prospect. i havent been to the norwich games but have heard they use it. not sure whether they play narrow or wide but i think we're capable of doing both. pardew certainly seems to like the way they play from what i've heard. i think the 3-6-1 may be possible, although unlikely. we don't hear about it much but Guus Huddink used it in his successful world cup campaigns with South Korea and Australia... -----------------Davis------------------ -------Jaidi------Fonte------Ward------- ----------Stock--------Morgan---------- Antonio---------------------------Waigo ---------Danns---------Lallana---------- ----------------Lambert----------------
