Dimond Geezer Posted 28 March, 2011 Share Posted 28 March, 2011 As a young goalkeeper myself at the time, I used to spend a lot of time watching Shilts, Flowers & Budgie (christ we were spoilt in those days). Loved his warm ups, he wasn't happy for the strikers to lash shots as hard as thet could at him, but went & did his own thing. It definitely paid dividens, 800 games & 46 years old when he finally retired. I loved the bit about sharpening his studs & spiking Ardiles, wish I'd thought of that. I think I'll be parting with a few pennies for that book.
Gemmel Posted 28 March, 2011 Share Posted 28 March, 2011 Pre season friendly against Bashley many moons ago. The bashley striker jumped up to head the ball, Budgie caught it and then launched into this guy with " You dared to try and score against me" and just went mental. The poor lad didn't know what to do. Ten minutes later he shouted to Ruddock that the same striker had called Ruddock "a see you next Tuesday". Ruddock promptly went straight through the player at the first opportunity, which Budgie thought was hysterical. Poor lad didn't know what day it was. I can't remember any more friendlies with Bashley after that

Dimond Geezer Posted 28 March, 2011 Share Posted 28 March, 2011 Was it Budgie who told a young Alan Shearer to go in hard on keepers & make sure he hits them?
millsy Posted 28 March, 2011 Share Posted 28 March, 2011 Budgie was great fun. When saints first choice keeper he came along to stoneham and played for our college team against a German college team. He turned up in old England admiral tracksuit, I'm guessing he played for England B team at some stage. He insisted he played up front even though we obviously wanted him to go in goal. From memory he scored a couple and was by far the best outfield player on the pitch. Can you imagine any current premier league keeper turning up for a knockabout game like this!! Just shows how much the guy loved playing football.

Fan The Flames Posted 29 March, 2011 Share Posted 29 March, 2011 He went on the p#ss as a young player and vowed then it was either all or nothing and has given his all ever since. Read an article about him awhile back, he used to wear his kit to watch MOTD and do all the moves the goalie should make, he used to carriy his kit about with him just in case theres was a need a for keeper somewhere and he often woke his wife up making saves in his sleep. Must have been unwell to do a 5 month stint in the Priory, glad he is alright now.
