Full respray

On a Mercedes forum i'm a member of they think a decent complete respray is at least £2k, are you sure you need a respray? Unless you're repairing accident damage most paintwork can be brought back to life with a mop and polish. If you decide you want to get a quote then don't mention respray, tell them what you want to achieve and they'll let you know the best option. As for time i think around 5-10 days is about right.

Cheers Swanny.

I'm not after concourse finish and certainly not to merc standard, just a respectable look.

Had a dull panel machine polished lazy year and tbh it looked worse after a couple of washes, really swirly and faded patches. Is 'mopping' different.

Btw it's very yellow.

The professionals have access to much better equipment and materials than any amateur can, find out if you have a really good car detailer near to you and ask them for a quote. It will be cheaper than a respray and will probably achieve the level of finish you need, a good one will spend all day and will wash, clay and polish the car to a finish better than when new if possible. I know of at least one supercar dealer who gets a detailer to go over brand new from the factory cars because the paintwork isn't up to scratch. (excuse the pun).

You seem to be a bit of an expert, can you give me some advice too please. I have a 86 BMW 635 in black. It has had some new panels, which to start with, blended in really well. But in the last couple of years you can really tell the difference between the new and old ones, as the old paint has lost some of its lustre.

Will a decent detailer be able to make both the old and new panels look the same, or in the long run will I be looking at a full respray?

Not an expert at all, just have taken an interest due to my car needing a respray due to rust. I'm led to believe that silver, black and metallics are very hard to match when spraying, but speak to a detailer and see what they have to say. If you're intending on keeping the car and considering its age it maybe worth saving up and having a proper bare metal respray done, it really depends on how attached to the car you are?

Cheers mate.

Gonna have a chat with one of them in a few weeks, biggest area of concern I reckon will be the plastic bumpers.

I will wait for your other recommendations although the one in segensworth sounds very good.

Swanny, Hamster said to look on here for your recommendations. Need to get some leather repaired and interior work, but would also be interested in detailing as I'm looking to move my oldish Merc on soon. Sounds like your local guy could be the man.

OK, the bloke who got back in touch with me details are - 07531 147646 Ask for Adam, he comes highly recommended by a respected Mercedes specialist in Horndean and a few other forum members with quite expensive cars, can't beat a recommendation IMHO

If you go somewhere and they show you some examples of their work, make sure you see stuff they've done a while ago and not just fresh work. I had some stuff done on a car once that looked sweet when it came out of the spray shop. The following winter loads of little bubbles appeared in the paint where it turned out that tiny moisture droplets had got into the paint during spraying and expanded once the cold weather caused them to freeze.

I know what you mean. Last year I had a chapmcome and machine polish one panel which looked really nice for a few weeks. Now it looks like it's been done with an angle grinder and all the fading has returned.

He was from Pompey so I blame myself really.

I'm no sprayer, but that is called microblister and caused by water not being filtered out of the air supply. Poor maintenance of the air compressor and water separators. Water always gathers in the pressure tank when air is compressed and should be frequently drained. What does that tell you about the firm/operator/sprayer?
