Saint Billy Posted 30 April, 2009 Share Posted 30 April, 2009 Presuming we do kick off in League 1 next season, what sort of player/s will we need to hold our own in that league. Last season many of us were concerned with the reliance on kids in what is a roughty toughty league. Even if many of them were talented, being kicked off the park is no fun by seasoned pro's. It did'nt take long for the old confidence to be knocked and after a few nice performances it all went downhill quickly. I have not watched too much League 1 footy, is it more of the same, worse or easier. What type of player is going to help us grind out results? Griffo Posted 30 April, 2009 Share Posted 30 April, 2009 We're definitely playing in league one next season. Umm, from what I've seen on the TV the quality is actually quite poor football wise. I'd imagine as far as rough and tumble it's the same as the Championship.
SaintRobbie Posted 30 April, 2009 Share Posted 30 April, 2009 Men. Next no-brainer question please. One caveat. We need a smattering of youth - 2-3 kids competing for places and on the bench is no bad thing. But ideally, a team of seasoned pros please. I hope we buy up a bunch of experienced men in the latter end of their competitive careers this summer.

A very true statement , but lets make the experience players 6ft plus. imo if you have size and strength down the spine of the team then talented youngsters can perform

I'm hopeful that without the hockey monster dictating team selections and aquisitions common sense will prevail.
Saint Billy Posted 30 April, 2009 Author Share Posted 30 April, 2009 Just say we do get bought out and a side is built to get us back to the championship, I just wonder what players will be available. Are there many ex prem/championship players willing to play in League 1.

Like when Burley was here last season and then Lowe would never have come back I wish it was that easy Edited 30 April, 2009 by John B

Better to have good League 2 and Conference players who want to improve rather than fallen stars

Just look at Peterborough. Aaron McLean, George Boyd and Craig Mackail-Smith where all signed from non league football for peanuts and have all scored a shed load of goals for them in the promotion seasons. lee_saint Posted 30 April, 2009 Share Posted 30 April, 2009 I've watched quite a bit of League One and League Two football over the past few years, you need to have 'men' in the back four, alot of teams tend to play with one upfront, normally a bigger target man with people running off, you cannot get away with playing 17/18 year olds there they will struggle. Midfield is where you can mess about and put a few kids in, aslong as you have one old head in there you'll be alright, someone nippy on the wings and teams will struggle. Lee Holmes was awesome for Walsall in this league so we might have a gem there if he isn't injured, upfront, we need someone who can put the ball in the net, Kandol or Fleetwood could be options.
