david in sweden Posted 5 May, 2009 Share Posted 5 May, 2009 No really ! I know some will say they're responsible for the relegation, (and that's not wrong,) but almost every game this season we've had 5-6 Academy / former Academy lads on the pitch at one time or another. Most would have been glad to have got a place on the bench a year ago, instead of which they've had to bear the brunt of the season, and the stress was too much. YES I know that many times we liked the possession football, but not the 90 minute score. However, whatever they learned will go out the window with the (possible) departure of the midfield trio, Saga and maybe DMG and Euell. I can't see an eventual new coach keeping them all in the squad next season. Those who are left will be glad to stay as the "new" manager will undoubtedly have to bring in a few more experienced players and the budding talents like ; Thomson, White, Paterson, Gillett and Gobern ...will be back to the Reserves or be rewarded with the last 10 minutes run-out from the bench. I hope I'm wrong, but if you were taking over would keep them all on.. and hope they do better than this season- think not !
Rocker268 Posted 5 May, 2009 Share Posted 5 May, 2009 I think Gillett deserves a continued run in the first team, he has come on loads this year in my opinion and it showed committment to play against Burnley even though he wasn't fully fit. I agree though any new manager will come in and want to replace a large part of the team. Although there is a thread about today's echo elsewhere, after reading it I think we really need a manager with lots of English contacts, who can get either cheap loans in or free transfers to act as a spine to this team. Born In The 80s Posted 5 May, 2009 Share Posted 5 May, 2009 I feel sorry for the young fans. At least I enjoyed some highs before all the lows... Exactly the same how i feel after pretty much every game. When i see little kids walking to the game with names like Saganowski, Wright-Phillips and Skacel on their shirts i really feel sorry for them. I also hugely respect these kids as well. I'd guess in their class they are probably the only ones who don't support Man Utd, Liverpool or Chelsea. I hope to god they all get to experience the good times in years to come because they ****ing deserve it. I was chatting to a family (Mum, Dad, 2 kids) after the Forest game on the walk back to the town centre. All season ticket holders and all have been to several away games. The kids said cheering and dancing to Chelsea Daggers after the FOREST goals was the highlight of their season and to be honest, i completely agreed with them! Says it all really.... londonsaint1604 Posted 5 May, 2009 Share Posted 5 May, 2009 Gillett worked hard and was one of our best players before he got injured. He should be starting next season.

I'm just looking forward to the future, although I did miss out on Saints greatest (and arguably footballs greatest) times Saints have always seemed to rise and fall, hopefully we will now see a rapid rise, but the right decisions need to be made now, as to who takes over the club who manages us etc.

Yes Gillett's a tough little guy, worth his place and I think Lloyd James has improved a lot, too...as for the others ...?
David Strover Posted 5 May, 2009 Share Posted 5 May, 2009 I feel sorry for the young fans. At least I enjoyed some highs before all the lows... Yup 1976 I was there with Bobby Cassidy, 'king brilliant - nobody at the club, none of the miserable gits on this Forum nor the know it alls can ever take that away from me...until I go dolally-tap or die. Excellent.

James, Gillett & McGoldrick have clearly benefitted from a long run in the first team, but most of the other youngsters were very young - 17,18,19 - and were clearly not quite ready. Next season, a year older and already with a few first team runouts under their belts, they will also progress quickly. One of my many gripes with Burley was that the above, plus Lallana, never got a whiff of the first team & had they had a dozen games last season would have found it easier to step up this season. Lads like Paterson, McLaggon, Thompson, White & Mills will do very well next season

Yes it was a foul, but had it been any other referee and any other opponents his tackle might only have warranted a free kick - and hardly even a yellow, let alone red. Victor Posted 7 May, 2009 Share Posted 7 May, 2009 A lot of the so-called young players were not that young. Simon Gillett is 23 - an old man compared to Bale or Walcott. It wasn't so much their age as that so many inexperienced players were thrown in together rather than introduced within a settled side. I don't blame any of them, and was particularly pleased by the progress of Gillett and James.

I thought Olly Lancashire's red card against QPR was an even worse decision.

I love this website, If your not 16-17 then your old and if your not the finished article at 20 your past it. In the good old days young players were given some time to adapt, Gillett is a bit of a special case as he was consistently ignored by previous managers and I'm surprised he never left after a couple of decent loan spells away from the club. In the good old days young players were given some time to adapt, Gillett is a bit of a special case as he was consistently ignored by previous managers and I'm surprised he never left after a couple of decent loan spells away from the club. It's true of course, Simon Gillett was consistantly ignored at a period when we won " Manager of the Month " every time ...with a NEW manager each month. Simon was left out of squads, rather like another former player...Chris Baird, who came from N.I. as a 16 year old ....and didn't get a regular spot until he was past 22. Gillett was frozen out, and out on loan probably ignored because he wasn't 6' tall ...and got kicked around a bit. Hopefully he'll get a regular place now as he seems to have toughend up a lot this season. We have an embarrassing record of releasing players who might be "shorter than average" in height...amongst others ...Dennis Wise and Kevin Phillips (when they were teenagers). Looking back a long way (as I can) quite a few players who were shorter in stature made good careers in the game. Billy Bremner and Ron (Chopper) Harris, and Kevin Keegan (who was only 5'8" in his big boots). In our own golden oldies list; Terry Paine was only 5' 7" and John Sydenham was 5' 6"...(so there's hope yet for Simon G.)
