Being good at free kicks doesn’t make you a £50m player though in my book. It’s an argument which will never have an outcome anyway. His value is only really relative to the club. As I’ve said many times, he won’t move because he’s not worth what the club will value him at.

I’m staggered people think 30m is ‘massively’ under his value. Buendia was only 33m and he’s a much better player in a traditionally more expensive position (attackers always seem to have more value as they’re match winners).

So if Villa offered, say, £50m (that simply won’t happen because he’s not worth that) you don’t think we’d sell? Don’t be stupid. Of course money doesn’t guarantee success, but the common factor in your comment above is people leaving their current club for Everton because they are willing to pay for it due to that ambition ‘bollocks’. So you kind of prove my point in that’s the reason he’d leave. What’s more appealing? Going to a new club with a pay rise and ‘ambition’ to break into top 6 with financial backing behind it, or staying at a club who are regressing and ambition is to stay in the league with 0 financial backing. I know what I’d prefer.

Probably not. He’s not worth the money it’s likely take to get him, But If they offer us enough money and we accept a bid then, yes I think he’d be interested in going there.

It will if he has a bad season and he has no significant interest next season. As things stand, there’s a very good chance we could go down this season. He could end up being a championship player. You’re a bit of a fool if you think a player would stay on a sinking ship because he didn’t want to uproot his family. Birmingham is a couple of hours away, there’s a good chance his family wouldn’t even move. It’s not as if he’s being linked with a move to the states.

Unfortunately years of under funding, buying cheap players who aren’t good enough and a willingness to flog anything that’s not nailed down has resulted in this. We’re not the progressive club challenging the top of the table as we once were a few years back. That’s been taken by The Leicester’s, West Ham’s, Everton’s and probably Villa in the coming seasons. Get used to us selling to those around us as our players just aren’t good enough for the top clubs anymore. We’ll get cherry picked by those in and around us with a bit more ambition.

I expect that he is interested in a move to Villa. They’re a team on the way up, we’re on the way down. He’ll not get a move for a traditional ‘big’ club, so a villa, Everton, West Ham would be a good move for him. If the money is right £40-£50m (I don’t think he’s worth that though. He’s probably worth £25-30m) sell up and rebuild.

Even if Maguire and Henderson who are 2 of our best players in their position, can make an impact in the later rounds when we’ll play better teams? Even our 2nd side is good enough to get out of this group.

Yeah it’s weird. Almost as odd as the Scotland love in from the club because of Adams and Armstrong. JWP, free kicks aside, is pretty average and would offer no more than Phillips has in an attacking capacity. Phillips is better defensively and our ropey CB’s means we effectively need to play to holding midfielders. JWP keeps the ball moving but often are easy sidewards and backwards passes. I don’t think he has it in his locker to unpick a defence with a through ball. If we’re looking for more creativity then Bellingham is your man for that. I really don’t see where and how JWP gets into this England side other than injuries. As Duck said, the larger squad means we can gamble on players like Henderson (who massively underrated, a great leader and natural winner), who’ll potentially have a bigger impact in later stages against the better teams. The only player we have who could make a difference and have an impact on this England side this tournament is Ings. He’s closest like for like of Kane we have (just not as good), but just a bit more mobile. I think he’d have worked the channels better and get us up the pitch than Kane did Friday night. I don’t actually think midfield was a huge issue Friday night, for me, the lack of width from full backs not getting forward was a problem and we needed the soark of Grealish a little earlier. Ultimately, it was a game England didn’t need to win and Southgate set up to not lose rather than to win. If Stones header went in it’d have been a different game and probably 3/4-0.

Exactly. I doubted Phillips but understood why he was included as cover for rice. However, from memory (I’m sure I’ll be corrected) I’ve never seen JWP dictate a game like Phillips did and that was against an old, but very, very good midfield. As Egg said, we’d (England) be a worse team with JWP in it. His free kicks are good, but they’re no good if he’s sat on the bench.

Unproven? He was very good for Norwich the season they went down. I’m amazed he stayed if I’m honest.
