Some of them did it for that reason. Some of them did it because they were just following the flag / duty etc. Some did it because they heard of what was happening to those oppressed by the Axis. Some did it for adventure. Some did it because their mates did. Many did it for a whole mix of these things, and some would have sympathised with fascism. There's no secret there.
