  1. And she also intervened at the Commonwealth Conference in Lusaka in 1979 overuling Thatcher who wanted to accept Smith's compromise settlement, instead insisting on a one man one vote solution. Whilst her mother had some sympathy for Smith (a legacy of the Empire Days), the current Queen did not share such imperial nostalgia. Smith and Mugabe, two tyrants who destroyed a country.
  2. Even his service during WWII was borne more out of stopping Nazi expansion from their existing African colonies which threatened "Britain's" colonies. His first loyalty was to his own country, namely Rhodesia/Zimbabwe and when push come to shove his true colours were to be seen flying high above the House of Assembly. Anyone who commits treason against my country, defies various Governments of the time and then is an accessory to the destruction of their own country is not a great leader in my book (now had he had a citizen on the board, he might have been shown the light).
  3. A rather obvious point lost on Dune, but that said that piece in the Daily Heil was equally critical of Smith, calling him and Mugabe two sides of the same problem, a view shared by most. When push came to shove Smith showed no loyalty or respect to my country and went against Governements of both blue and red leanings, as well as the establishment, monarchy and wider population. He was no friend if the UK and ultimately a disaster for the country he presided over.
  4. That will be the great Ian Smith who attempted to use Rememberance Sunday as a cheap publicity stunt for his apartheid regime. The great Ian Smith who forced the United Nations to enforce economic sanctions for the first time. And of course the great Ian Smith who effectively committed treason against this great country of ours. This great man and his delusional call for UNI sowed the seeds for the bitterness, turmoil and vacuum that allowed despots like Mugabe to flourish. As the Telegraph noted in his obituary, Smith "was the co-author of Zimbabwe's tragedy".
  5. Would have thought that in 99.999% occasions the individual would know where they are from. And perhaps intentionally witholding this information should be made an offence (a sort of contempt of court issue and send them away until they cough up). I have no problem with those claiming refugee status, or claiming asylum, but it needs to done correctly. Those trying to dodge the system actually undermine those who have a genuine case.
  6. There were a couple of late changes to the plan (I ended up in my normal seat!!), but not as exciting as last year's match, but still 3 points which is the name of the game!!!
  7. "Always look out for Turks carrying knives" to e Life Of Brian look on the bright side of life tune. A not very impressive reference to the attacks on Leeds fans in Istanbul.
  8. Will have to wait until the BBC highlights to come out before I can say for sure, but I thought that quite a few of ours gathered at the scene of the crime and looked as though they were pretty upset with the tackle (Chaplow & Hammond plus Harding giving it large - at least). Not sure how bad the tackle was and it may be that it was worthy of being wound up about, but I wouldn't say we left it solely up to the ref to decide (happy to be proved wrong when the highlights come out and they've included the sending off).
  9. Have to concur with many of the sentiments on here in that: a) Wasn't ever that nervy, even when they pulled a goal back. Always thought we were going to win. b) We took our foot off the gas once we were two up and never seemed to get going again. c) Substitutions seemed to disrupt us (not that we were that fluent before) d) Had the feel of a training match, which increased once they went down to ten men. e) Attendance was poor (midweek and unattractive opposition aside, I did expect more). f) Winning ugly earned us the same points as the great Saturday performance (next!!!!!)
  10. Richard, Dan, Richard, Dean, Jos, Jose, Richard. That's really funny aint it!!!!! There's been some godd chants and banter at SMS and other grounds, but first names in a strange voice is not up there with them.
  11. It was so bad that I'm happy to post this twice!!!!! I thought "Steeeeeeeve" was cringetastic, but then we hit new levels with "Dan, Jose, Richard". As well as being dinlotastic I also thought it looked as though it was putting him off his game.

  13. Nice!!
  14. Not seen that before, but if you were on The Archers Terrace, circa 1986, then you might have seen the Saints equivalent. An acquaintace of mine ended up on the wrong side of some Man City lads before the game and after telling us all about being chased around Burtons with a City fan wielding a golf club he then proceeded to point out about half a dozen of them who had the balls to come in our end!!!!! The launching of a cup of tea in the golf club fan's face then started off a few minutes of mayhem.
  15. Cheers for that. Two observations: Much preferred the first half commentary, my French isn't as bad as I thought and there's something about Sousampton and Lombbert that I like. Also enjoyed Chaplow running off in to space at the end of the game. very apt considering he had been end to end all game.
  16. Thought he played brilliantly up top and as much as I like Connolly I would be starting Guly over him for a few games at least. Always rated him and thought the higher the league the more he would flourish.
  17. Totally agree. For me it's never been about whether you've got a season ticket, whether you manage to go regularly or not, or whether you even live in the City. If you support the Saints in whatever guise then you're a friend of mine. Like you I have a father who will be making his annual pilgrimage on Tuesday to celebrate his 75th birthday as he struggles nowadays to go regularly (once again Posh, and he reminds me we thrashed them last season). Someone who introduced me to Saints 37 years ago and who went through thick and thin through the 50's - 90s. If anyone had the audacity to wave their season ticket at him then I would take pleasure in inserting it one of their orifaces. Cringetastic behaviour.
  18. Have to agree, Boro are not a bad side and their away record this season was W4 D1 L1 and think they have lost something like 4 in 28. We beat (sorry, hammered) a pretty decent team who were sat in second place and don't think we should pretend otherwise.
  19. And for some it's no different than shopping at Tescos (and they can always go elsewhere if they feel like it), but I'm sure for others it's a bit more than just household shopping or a leisure activity.
  20. I might have my rose tinted glasses still on from this afternoon, but I reckon we retained possession and made as many passes as the Channon v Liverpool goal (the only difference was that the move for that goal started just outside our own box, whereas this afternoon's goal was about possession and passing in the Boro half). Can't wait to see the whole build up as the Lambert/Connolly link up was great at the end, but can't really remember who was involved prior to that.
  21. Just hobbled in and after being poor at Reading I was a bit concerned about how we would bounce back but shouldn't have worried as we were sensational today!!!!! I don't think Boro are that bad a side (their record suggests they're half decent), but we absolutely ripped them apart. 5-0 would have flattered them today, as we were sooooo good. They couldn't compete in the middle fo the park and it seemed as though we could score every time we went forward. The first half hour they were chasing shadows as Lallana, Chaplow, Guly, Lambert, Cork and Hammond were just bypassing them. As for the goals, well they were all pretty decent, but the last one came off the back of 5 minutes of posession, two touch football, 30+ passes and some skilful play by almost the whole team. If they don't show the whole build up on the highlights then it will be a travesty. I'll consider my marks for another thread, but they'll be plenty of 9's!!!!! (only downside is think Connolly was off the pace again).
  22. Off to the match in a bit and really looking forward to a tough battle today. Think being top brings some pressure (expectations, pressure of not wanting to fail), but it also brings many positives (confidence, self belief, good supprt etc) and today has got me wavering between self-belief & confident and a bit concerned at such a tough test.
  23. Indeed!! You only have to consider what you think of the dinlos from opposition teams who sing, "Play Up Pompeii" to get an idea of what you must sound like singing the equivalent of the day.
  24. That's not how it works on here though!! If you happen to disagree with something or suggest that perhaps you're not comfortable with a decision/action then you must be an ungrateful, whingeing, good for nothing anti Cortese renegade. Middle ground??? Not on here!!!
  25. You've hacked someone's account and are just talking to yourself. Pork!!!!
