Hmm, a bit far out. Especially the politics bit, as my little bro is so far right he's off the scale But he does like the auditing chat as he and my dad used to do a lot of small building works for the NHS. We don't pay him for his time and vice versa when we visit each other at weekends (not very often because of Mr TF's shifts) but every man / woman is worth his / her price for the job. See, that's because I was brought up properly and taught to respect people and their worth.

The question wouldn't arise. The conversation went: Me: "Bro - I've got quite a bit of work to do on the house. How are you fixed for work ATM?" Him: "Sis, it's pretty darned quiet right now so I could do it for you" Me: "Great - obviously I'll pay you for your time and materials but it'll make sense for both of us if you stayed over rather than travelling backwards and forwards every day for a week" I wouldn't insult anyone by asking them to do something for nothing.
-
Will you do some work for me then, if you're prepared to pay me for your time? In answer to your question: a) because my brother doesn't have much work on at the moment b) how do you know how long the work will take? We estimate a week therefore it's best for all if he stays over. It wouldn't be viable for either of us if he travelled up and down the A34 for a week c) because I trust him and I don't know any local carpenters

My brother doesn't have much work on ATM Johnny. I have some work that needs doing. It makes sense to bring the two together. He could include his travel time and costs in his bill and I could counter-charge with board and lodgings but that's plain daft - it's obviously cheaper for both of us for him to stay at my house. However I shall be paying him for the work he's doing on my house - I don't expect to get something for nothing.

You're right Mike and I hope I didn't offend you in any way. It's nice of you to offer and I'd be the first to help out a friend if I could. My point was that some people moan about some people getting something for nothing but then applaud someone for trying to do just that. I appreciate the guy lives some way away and he may just be letting his house whilst he's temporarily living in Cambridge. But if he's a commerical landlord, he should be prepared to pay to fix a problem for his tenant.

My brother, not my son. You are a numpty sometimes, aren't you. If he travelled back and forth for a week, his petrol costs (which would be reflected in his price to me) would be far more than the cost of putting him up. So I'm saving him time travelling - and free B & B is a price worth paying to see him. No doubt you send your family members to B & B rather than put them up when they want to visit you? Your argument would be more robust if you'd suggested that I employ a local carpenter - keeping it in the community sort of thing.

Haven't you got a warranty on the boiler? I seem to remember that when we moved into our (brand new) house, the boiler was guaranteed for 2 years.

I can see I've got it all wrong When my garage door refused to shut yesterday, I should have jumped on here and asked for free help instead of forking out £40 for a bloke to fix it for me. Perhaps I should have asked said bloke to fix it for free, in a 'community spirit' sort of way. My brother is a carpenter. Soon, I will need some work done in my house. I've asked him to do it for me but I will pay him for his time (a 2 hour journey each way and / or overnight stay). I wouldn't dream of asking him to do it for nothing.

No I can't see much of a difference, TBH. If he's got a property he lets for income, he has a responsibility as well (and it's a legal one). Tough tits if it sets him back time and expense - that's what he must expect if he lets a property.

I doubt you would be quite so charitable if you owned a small plumbing business that has just lost out on a few quid. I don't know Mike so I'm not knocking him but I hope whoever does the job is appropriately registered. Otherwise Dr Who might find himself up sh*t creek.

Typical reactionary comment from the likes of you who usually berate some people for getting something for nothing. It is his legal duty, as a landlord, to get the problem sorted out.
-
If you are a landlord receiving rent from a tenant, surely it behoves you to pay someone to sort the problem out, rather than relying on someone to do it for free?

No, I was talking geographic size, since those are the borders that need defending. Although I think most of our operations are offensive rather than defensive.

Aren't those in the know saying there's more risk from cyber terrorism? I can't see how ships can deal with such a threat as that. Why do we have so many more armed forces personnel than other countries of comparible size, such as, say, Sweden or the Netherlands?

This question arises from my ignorance and is not politically motivated or spun. Why do we need to keep possession of the Falklands?

Thanks for posting this link. I've just spent a good hour browsing and it brought back many happy memories of those days -
I've not been to Brussels but we did go to Bruges a couple of years ago - and by Eurostar. Lots of interesting stuff - diamond museum, chocolates galore, canal trip. We stayed in a lovely old hotel called Ter Brughe next to a canal. The most romantic room I've ever stayed in. Good restaurants around the main square with lots of outdoor seating, even at this time of year.

IF (please note it's a big IF) IF this is true, this is dreadful. Received wisdom is that 1 in 10 men is a homosexual. By my reckoning, with over 8,000 members on here, we have 800 gay members. It would hit the coffers of this site if they were all banned!
