  1. Because they're working up to being off 'ill' when, in fact, they're off to do their last minute shopping?
  2. Hmmm, well my previous car WAS a Megane (04 model) and I NEVER had a problem. And I don't with my Mazda. However, there are certain car parks in our home town where Mr TF dare not park his Impreza even though I can park in said car parks. Where's Ponteh - the fount of all wisdom - when you need him
  3. Not quite the same thing but we've found that Mr TF's car remote DOESN'T work in some car parks. Something to do with being near a radio mast, we've been told. But my car is never affected.
  4. I had tears of pride in my eyes last night when all the Olympians who had won medals paraded at the start of the show. What an awesome sight. The Paralympians especially get my admiration. I think it is amazing that people overcome their disadvantages, whether they were born with them or whether they aquired them as the result of an accident. I bet some people with such disabilities would turn inwards - I'm not sure I'd have the strength of character and determination to overcome such barriers. So I'm very pleased that young Ellie won 'Young SPOTY'. I was rooting for either Rebecca Adlington or Rebecca Romero but I'm more than happy that Chris Hoy won. I thought it was a good show all round last night and good to see cycling getting such recognition. Here's the numbers of votes cast: Chris Hoy 283,630 votes Lewis Hamilton 163,864 Rebecca Adlington 145,924 Ben Ainslie 35,472 Joe Calzaghe 34,077 Andy Murray 19,415 Nicole Cooke 18,256 Christine Ohuruogu 7,677 Bradley Wiggins 5,633 Rebecca Romero 4,526
  5. I think I would disagree just a little bit. I'm not flying a flag for Jones but his job is to report on the financial situation as it is and probably come up with some options for appraisal. His office would also produce the annual accounts. However, it would be the Board that voted on which option (if any) to adopt. He is, in effect, the messenger, IMO.
  6. Boosey & Hawkes
  7. 'Lishen to your Chairman whilsht he givsh the half time talk' :smt102
  8. Watford are in the financial mire. They sacked their manager and the chairman resigned. If only.............
  9. How droll you are sometimes, Nick. I'm barely holding my sides together
  10. This was your Road to Damascus, wasn't it I bet your phone is on the Orange network too. Bless
  11. I imagine it's called a Nativity Play to satisfy those parents who are Christians :smt102
  12. Good lord no  We public sector employees can't afford to buy mansions in Spain. He is a very successful businessman who has taken very early retirement and, in all honesty, probably won't miss the £2K a month. But I'm sure there are lots of people who have retired to Spain on modest pensions who are really suffering. My friend was also telling me that the cost of living has rocketed in Spain - although I think that's Europe-wide however. There are far more people out of work there (proportionately) and the Spanish construction industry has absolutely ground to a halt.
  13. It probably was, TBH
  14. Whereas a friend of mine, living in Spain but collecting his pension in sterling, is losing about £2K a month he reckons!
  15. I think we should join the Euro NOW!
  16. Will I still be able to 'spend a penny'
  17. And I've read today that Rupey's buddy / fellow investor in W H Ireland, David Ross, has had to resign a further 3 directorships, having resigned from Carphone Warehouse because of alleged infringements of shareholding rules. According to the article, he has secured loans against shareholdings in other companies too  http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2008/dec/11/bigyellowgroup-carphonewarehousegroup I wonder if he will have to resign from W H Ireland too?
  18. However, it now appears that a solution has been agreed by the creditors http://www.contractjournal.com/Articles/2008/12/11/63070/rf-webb-saved-after-creditors-agree-rescue-plan.html
  19. LS - could it be because Lowe Holdings already owns a number of electrical engineering companies? http://www.loweoliver.co.uk/loweholdings/ I wonder why Webb lost the contract at QA in Portsmouth  I'll ask some of my contacts there. I was surprised to see that Lowe & Oliver named Oxford Hospitals as a client. I worked on a number of capital programmes there and I don't recall them. In fact the first time I heard of Lowe & Oliver was on this forum
  20. Yes he did. However, it has been proved to him that this article was based on myth and lies. He chooses to ignore that.
  21. You haven't read all the previous posts, have you If you had, you'd realise that immigrants are unable to get benefits for quite a while unless they originate from the 'original' EU. The same applies to migrants from this country to EU countries. Immigrants from the new EU member states (known as A8 immigrants) do not qualify. Asylum seekers, once their applications are admitted, do get some help as they are forbidden to work for a set period.
  22. I don't think you'll get an answer today TG. He's used up all his posts
  23. Although the thread title would suggest the opposite.
  24. Again, if you'd read previous posts, you'd see that we were talking about all incomers to the UK. This includes legal and illegal immigrants and also asylum seekers. Unfortunately it would seem that the US contravenes the UN Convention on Human Rights (Article 14) in its treatment of asylum seekers although it is signed up to it.
