  1. Going off in a slightly different direction, I heard an interesting factoid on the radio just now. This is the lowest interest rates have been since 1957. In 1957 petrol was 3s 6d a gallon in old money. Extrapolated to take account of the increase in inflation / wages / cost of living since then, this would equate to 88p a litre nowadays! Yep, I was amazed too!
  2. Err no - this entry was submitted only last month http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyril_Smith
  3. Here's a link to it: http://www.last.fm/music/Creedence+Clearwater+Revival/_/Bad+Moon+Rising+%28Live+1970%29 Oh and my bad - it's Creedence, not Credence
  4. To the tune of Credence Clearwater Revival 'Bad Moon Rising'?
  5. Good idea - we play better away from home anyway.
  6. Going back to the main point of the thread: The issue with the retention of DNA is that the Govt. has apparently chosen one of the least reliable tests to use in cases involving DNA evidence. There is the problem of 'false positives' and, as I said before, the fact that your DNA could appear at a crime scene completely innocently, or more disturbingly, be planted there. And when this database is sold to Life insurance companies and they refuse to insure you because of an inherited genetic issue, that's fine. Or the Govt use it to profile you and tax you accordingly...
  7. I fell for it! Barsteward!
  8. Oh OK thanks. I don't live in the area any more - that's my excuse. I could understand a bit of your council tax going to BIC if Bournemouth was still in Hampshire (because part of your council tax goes to the County council). But, as it's now in Dorset, I don't understand that at all
  9. Showing my ignorance here - what is BIC?
  10. It's closed down! http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/3950488.Doors_close_on_Lapland_New_Forest_/
  11. I wonder how that poor little girl's doing?
  12. I honestly didn't know that!
  13. Don't you have schools in Southampton? Or services for the elderly? Do you all have to take your rubbish to the tip, or Portsmouth, since no-one collects it? Haven't you got any police or fire services? Next time your local council sends you information on where council tax is spent, I suggest you read it. You might just learn something. But we should get back to the topic.....
  14. Weirdly, I hadn't UNTIL TUESDAY. I had to do some work in Coventry (first time I've ever been there - what a dump) and I had to walk along 'Sky Blue Way' (:vom:) to the Council Offices. I passed Godiva Building Society. Made me chuckle at the bare-arsed cheek. Geddit?
  15. Why thankyou sweetie :smt050
  16. Because Southampton City Council is run by the Conservatives. Say no more........
  17. I have never, ever done that Rob and you know it Mainly because I'm not. Anyway, I didn't say how much did I? As it happens 2 of my 3 children share a birthday week (this week in fact) - I'm buying them each a framed print of Karl Marx. Hardly pushing the boat out.
  18. My thoughts exactly!
  19. But at least I wasn't posting the negative of what I was trying to say (hunting feverishly for a get-out)
  20. The potential for a future government with extreme views to mis-use this information is what scares me the most. And don't say that we'll never have a government of extreme views - nobody knows that for sure. Last time we talked about this, there was mention of a case of an innocent man's fingerprints being 'lifted' and transposed to a piece of evidence. He didn't have a criminal record but his fingerprints were on the database from a past incident. Of course, his fingerprints on the database matched those on the evidence and he was charged. And, of course again, eventually he managed to prove his innocence but only after a lot of grief and, IIRC, loss of income because of the implications. Let's face it databases are not error-proof.
  21. Oh yes but I'll say no more in case Rob gets on my case too!
  22. http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/sunderland/7764671.stm No surprise there, then.
  23. Yep - when I was a child. Then I saw through the sham. We do, however, celebrate birthdays - far more relevant IMO.
  24. Eh  If he's found guilty his fingerprints won't be destroyed!
