  1. I hear what you say and I do believe anyone can apply to the Charity Commission to ask for information about percentages going to the causes. But ask yourself this, who would run and manage the very large charities if a professional wage wasn't paid to a professional leader? You'd be pushed to find people prepared to do such a demanding job for nothing. When I worked for the NHS there was a very highly regarded person I knew, very good at her job, who went on to head Oxfam. I would imagine, regardless of her altruism, that she would find it difficult to give up a reasonably paid job to work for nothing. Yet she was just the calibre of person needed to run such a big organisation.

  3. Looking at the job you linked from the Guardian website, I would suggest that's a reasonable salary - not over the top at all. It's what many middle managers would earn in the private and senior managers in the public service and it's a big job. The charities wouldn't stand a chance of raising the funds they need if they didn't have fairly high profile people running them. The days of the Barnados box at school are long gone. BTW I'm often saddened that it's only the 'glamorous' charities that raise the big money.
  4. I guess a lot of these charities have to resort to more aggressive tactics because they have had their support from local and central government slashed.
  5. "The IMF said the UK was "progressing slowly". It suggested the Chancellor, George Osborne, should consider reining back his austerity plan. The IMF's report said: "In the United Kingdom, the recovery is progressing slowly, notably in the context of weak external demand and ongoing fiscal consolidation." It said economic weakness and a lack of willingness to lend were holding back the private sector. The IMF rarely gives direct advice, preferring to give discreet prompts. It said about the UK: "Greater near-term flexibility in the path of fiscal adjustment should be considered in the light of lacklustre private demand."

  7. Congratulations! There was a gap of 2yrs 3 months between my first and second and 4 and a half years between 2nd and 3rd. Both my daughters have recently had second children and the biggest difficulty they're finding is that the babies are not as easy as the first children were. I guess we all forget quickly the difficult bits.
  8. I don't understand the preoccupation with a dead body. I know some people think the body is (I'm going to say) sacrosanct (because I can't think of the word that I want). To me the memory of the dead person is far more important and I think if a relative of mine donated an organ, I'd get huge comfort from knowing that they might have helped someone else.
  9. OK but Chinny's legal fees?
  10. What about Chinny's legal fees? After all those court hearings, not to mention counsel's fees, they've got to be quite hefty!
  11. Only SLIM men should wear team shirts.
  12. Well, to his credit, Tony Husband DID reply albeit in a very nebulous way: Dear ............. Thanks for the note. I suggest there maybe a little bit of semantics in the various arguments. I am of course aware of Barcelona’s shareholder ownership and indeed many similar German models. Portsmouth is a hybrid version of Trust ownership (the words of a leading Sports lawyer- not me) backed as you say by high-net worth individuals and supporter donations, large and small. I’ll be referring to the UK more often than not in future reports though as you do correctly point out that it could be confusing when we do hear about fans owning Barcelona, and indeed, the Green Bay Packers! Thanks for the note though. Regards, Tony Tony Husband, Sports Editor and Presenter, BBC South Today, I wasn't able to watch the evening news bulletin - I guess it was the same as the lunchtime one still with reference to the 'largest fan owned club in Europe'?
  13. I think the problem at the moment is that relatives can override the wishes of someone who carried a donor card.
  14. And I was at the girls' school (almost) next door
  15. I remember the days when King Edward's was a first-rate state school before it was allowed to go independent.
  16. Exactly! I just emailed him pointing that out - doubt it'll make any difference though.
  17. But I wouldn't want to 'distribute' it to elitist educational establishments. It's not like my grandchildren would gain anything from going to such schools.
  18. I don't have a 'hang up' at all. Someone asked what qualification Cameron had to be PM. I pointed out that, like a lot of the current government, he went to Eton. Those who selected him firstly to stand as an MP and then as Conservative party leader obviously felt this to be a relevant qualification. Having said that, if I were to win the lottery this week, there's no way I'd offer to pay for my grandchildren to go to private / public schools.
  19. He went to Eton, silly
  20. If it does, and if indeed they do own the majority of the shares, they'll soon be down with Wycombe Wanderers and Exeter so league position will count for nowt.
  21. But I wonder if part of the 'deal' was as others as well as me have said in that there is an 'overage' clause in there
  22. I don't know if that information is collected by the powers that be. I'm basing my comment on personal knowledge of people (mainly women it has to be said as they make up the majority of public sector workers) who have lost their full-time jobs and have had to take two or three part-time jobs to keep their families fed and watered.
  23. I think you'll find that is a reflection of the number of jobs being 'occupied'. In other words, an awful lot of people are having to do more than one job because there are more part time than full time jobs available. So what seems like 3 jobs being created / occupied could well be someone working 3 hours here, 3 hours there, 3 hours somewhere else.
  24. 'Tenuous' might be better - they both like(d) blue???????
  25. So do we know yet if Chinny can appeal? Has that information been made public. And I thought this hearing was determine whether or not they can buy the ground. Who is to say that a better offer won't come to buy THE CLUB? Hard to believe, I know....
