  1. As does paying unemployment benefit to construction workers who are out of work and who are therefore not able to boost the economy by spending wages. Let alone the knock-on effect on associated industries (think manufacturers of scaffolding, pipework, civil engineering kit, bricks and then fittings for new houses and furniture and white goods - the list is endless)
  2. I think you're wrong here. There is a desparate shortage of decent housing and it's the lack of supply that drives prices up. Invest in housing and there would be 3 benefits. Firstly, a lot of unemployed construction workers would get jobs and there would be a knock-on effect on other employment sectors (retail and manufacturing) Secondly, increasing the supply would surely remove the demand element, meaning housing would become cheaper comparitively Lastly, controls could be put in place to ensure that much of the newly built housing was only available to, for example, housing associations / councils and not available to the private sector for commercial gain (e.g. don't allow buy-to-let landlords to buy it).

  5. But I think the question is right and pertinent. Administrators can't return companies to profit but I think what they are charged to do is to run the business on a non-loss making basis from the point at which they were appointed. Or am I wrong on that?

  10. Sorry - I don't know about schools in the Southampton area as I no longer live there. At the time that my children were in education, we could have just afforded to send them to private schools but we chose not to. They all did very well at state schools. My grandson is very able and his parents could easily afford to send him to a private school but have chosen to send him to the local state primary where he gets special coaching because of his ability. We all think that it's important for children to meet and mix with children from all backgrounds and abilities and that buying education perpetuates a divide. Did you know that the happiest societies are the ones that have the most equality of opportunity? But I respect the right of others to choose to buy privelege even if I think they're misguided.

  13. Turn it on its head - maybe if some wages weren't so **** poor, people WOULD be better off working than on benefits.

My SiL claimed (from Lloyds). It took months and months but eventually he got a substantial sum plus interest because of the delay.

  18. I like the sentiment but I think there's a tad more to it than that! According to this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21499926 "The 44-year-old was set to quit last week because of off-the-field events, including the sale of Matt Richie. But the ex-West Ham forward said he would have stayed on had the Football League agreed to the purchase of the club by new owners by 1700 GMT " But it still begs the question which is 'why would he move to Poopey where the ownership is even more shaky'?
  19. Can't beat sugar and lemon but I'm also quite fond of pancakes with sliced banana, chocolate sauce and icecream.
  20. But do them slowly and precisely. Don't just chuck your leg up in the air. Sit on a flat surface, flex your foot really hard so that your heel lifts off the surface. This will enable you to pull up your quadruceps and tighten it. Then lift the leg and hold it up in the air and straight for about 5 seconds before lowering it slowly. Then slowly release the tension in the quad and then the foot. Repeat but not too many times in one session.
  21. Finally - after two weeks without broadband having moved to a new house - I'm back! So could some kind soul give me a precis of events of the past two weeks please?
