Lineker responded to the criticism on twitter last night by saying that the MotD footage is edited 'in real time' during the match rather than after the game has finished. That would go some way to explain why the highlights don't always reflect the game as a whole as they will simply pick out the 'exciting bits' as they happen rather than focus on the more subtle aspects of a team's good performance.
