I think all that's being highlighted is the fact that some people will write-off a player altogether rather than expressing an opinion in a more pragmatic way.
In other words, rather than say: "Lallana is rubbish. He'll never be good enough for this league", instead say: "Lallana's not on top form at the moment but hopefully he can come good as he's got the underlying talent"
Two different ways of expressing the same observation: one destructive, one constructive.
