Which is correct: 'a hotel' or 'an hotel', 'a historian' or 'an historian'? And why is it 'a European' not 'an European'? The form an for the indefinite article is used before a spoken vowel sound, regardless of how the written word is spelt. If you say 'an otel' when speaking (which is now often regarded as distinctly old-fashioned), then it may be appropriate for you to write 'an hotel'; but most people say 'hotel' with a sounded 'h', and should write 'a hotel'. By contrast, words such as 'honour', 'heir' or 'hour' in which the 'h' sound is dropped are written with 'an'. Americans who drop the 'h' in 'herb' may also prefer to write 'an herb', but in standard British pronunciation the 'h' is sounded, and 'a herb' is therefore correct in writing. Because 'European' is said with an initial 'y' sound, which counts as a consonantal sound in English speech, it is said (and written) with 'a' not 'an'. An abbreviation such as M.P., which is pronounced em pea, begins with a spoken vowel, and so it is 'an M.P.'

It's a bit like forking out for a football season ticket without knowing what quality of football one will see......erm, on second thoughts....

The OS also says this about Skacel.... "He made 33 league starts and showed his versatility by slotting in strongly at left-back towards the end of his first campaign in English football and with a full pre-season behind him, he is set to be a key man in the coming year."

http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/articles/article.php?page_id=10752 "My boys can beat everyone but we can also lose because it depends on what day we have. Hopefully in the near future will win games even when we have a bad day we because you have to do that when you are serious. Before you win bad games you also have to win the good games and we have the quality but the experience is now what we have to add to our game." Translation anyone?

http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/articles/article.php?page_id=10753 "Saints boss Jan Poortvliet will have plenty of options at his disposal this weekend as Saints entertain Watford at St. Mary's. The Dutchman is boosted by the return of Simon Gillett, who is now fully fit following a knee ligament injury that has kept him out since the Barnsley match on September 20th. New loan signing Ryan Smith could also be in contention following two promising performances for the Reserves that have given him the chance to adapt to Saints' style of play, as Poortvliet explains. "Simon Gillett is back in good shape," he said, "and Ryan Smith is there as well. He has had some good games in the second team, promised a lot and we will decide whether he is starting on the bench." Stern John is also expected back shortly from his World Cup qualification exploits in mid-week with Trinidad and Tobago, but Saints have otherwise made it through the international break relatively unscathed, with no new injuries to report and several players now significantly closer to making a return. Poortvliet continued: "Michael Svensson is out for this weekend, but he's working hard to come back. Morgan Schneiderlin is still out but hopefully he will be back to train with us on Sunday and then we will look whether he can be fit for the Tuesday game. [against Sheffield United] "Romain Gasmi (broken metatarsal) is also here now and on Sunday shoud be available to train with us, whilst Jason Euell (dislocated shoulder) is training as well and is physically OK but the only thing is his shoulder and he has to wait a little longer before he can play a game." Frenchman Gasmi has been eased into training with his new team mates this week and Saints medical staff have been impressed with his fitness levels that he has worked hard to maintain throughout his injury lay-off. The RC Strasbourg loan player will undergo an x-ray on foot today and is hopeful of beginning full training on Sunday if given the all clear. Long-term absentees Lee Holmes and Wayne Thomas are both progressing well, with Holmes aiming at making it back into initial training within six to seven weeks. Anthony Pulis is also expected to finalise his move to the south coast shortly and could join up with Saints in around two weeks if given the all clear by the doctors." Stern John back "shortly"? How soon is 'shortly'? The last time I looked there was just over 24 hours left before the game....

Well, someone had to shoulder the blame...... It's ok - I'd already fetched my coat in anticipation....

'Twill be very helpful once the aforementioned beans have been spilled. No beans = no counting
-
Where are the bean spillers?
-
On the assumption that there are no appearance fee 'worries' if he plays for the reserves then I'd play there on a 'just in case' basis.....
-
"True" at time they were told or "True" at some point in the future?
-
120% would be better IMHO
-
There was a blatant opportunity to play him in the reserves on Tuesday to get him match fit, but it didn't happen.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/7665089.stm p.s. ever so slightly dull observation of the day....anyone else noticed that the BBC web page name for the CCC is 'eng_div_1'; League one is 'eng_div_2' and League Two is 'eng_div_3' ? Good to see the good old Beeb is keeping a-pace with the modern world.

We don't need any. We've got attacking midfielder Rudolf Skacel pumped up and waiting in the wings

Ask Fulthorpe. You'll find him at the grotty betting shop counter next to the bar.

A reasonable conclusion

Don't worry - I've worked it out for myself. The Answer is (b) Bunkum.....because they would of course 'lose' a sizable sum of money from those who would go to both regardless. And from them they would lose £12 per person per game 'pair'. So, this hair brained idea would only work if it attracted more than 6,000 extra to the cr*p games.....which is a tad unlikely. Bottom line is that I'm talking tosh (albeit to myself)
-
Why don't we go back to the gold, silver, bronze grading scheme but make the differences greater? i.e. make the less attractive games very cheap, but the more attractive games a little dearer....? For example.... Scenario 1 Saints Vs Doncaster on a cold Tuesday night: £24 Saints Vs Reading on a sunny Saturday 3pm kick off: £24 Trousers decides to give the Doncaster game a miss but goes to Reading. Money spent on matchday tickets = £24 Scenario 2 Saints Vs Doncaster on a cold Tuesday night: £10 Saints Vs Reading on a sunny Saturday 3pm kick off: £26 Trousers decides to go to both games. Money spent on matchday tickets = £36 So the club have got an extra £12 off me (+ any spend on merchandise & refreshments). If, say, an extra 5,000 decided to go to both games then that would bring in an extra £60,000 per game 'pair'. And if they did this for, say 10 games a season then they would rake in an extra £600,000. Clever or sheer unadulterated bunkum? You decide.
