It is problematic to write off players based on their team being relegated. Better to judge the player on their own merits, not that of the club they come from.

- The squad was stripped of players - He was only able to bring in loans and free transfers - Hit with two points deductions and likely relegation motivating a team isn't easy And yet he earned enough points (without the deduction) to finish comfortably safe. I'd say that is pretty impressive! I'm not saying I do or don't want him at Saints should Hassenhüttl mess up, it is hard to know how Rooney would do at a higher level. But I certainly wouldn't be dismissive of what he did last season in extremely difficult circumstances.

We already know he can score a lot of goals in the Championship, so I don't see how another season for him at that level will particularly help him in the PL if he returns next summer. He just looks out of his depth in the PL.

Apart from often being caught out of position, numerous dangerous mislaid passes and offering no aerial presence? He is a bottom half Championship level player at both right back and centre back(even when in a 3 man defence). If he has to play for Saints for any prolonged period of time next season it is a disaster waiting to happen.
