  1. There was a time when no hotel room would be complete without one.
  2. Just because someone is not in his hate club does make them a member of his fan club.

  5. Thanks. It all seems so very strange. Death comes to all of us sooner or later and we often talked about it but we were hoping for a bit more. We were only (!) 74 and we had a retirement planned. Yet my situation is going to arise for nearly half of the population and in many ways we all think that it isn’t going to happen and push it back into some corner of our minds. You could never describe it as a tragedy and we have had a life full of interests and lots of travel and we have two children and seven grandchildren so we can be proud of what we have achieved. What matters is how you lived your lives. We spent all our lives building a home for a family and before we knew it there’s no longer any need for it. Don’t waste any opportunity to give your loved ones a big hug and does anybody want any kitchen casseroles?
  6. Tough choice.
  7. Thanks Tamesaint. At the moment I am inconsolable.
  8. Now you’re just being obtuse. Nobody, not even you, can argue that he saved a goal. The word ‘save’ has multiple meanings. Not just the only one in your limited philosophy. And I don’t know about your world but does every sentence have to include an obscene swear word? You need to get out more.
  9. Indeed he is, but nothing is more certain than death and taxes. All very personal for me. I lost my lovely wife early in October. She was magnificent, never angry or complaining.
  10. Of course he saved a goal. I mentioned on an earlier thread about him coming to the edge of his box when an opposing forward was through and causing that opponent to put his shot wide of the goal.that is just as much a save as a fingertip push over the bar.
  11. Generous applause for him last night. Very sad.
  12. I have come to realise that he can’t use his left foot. I watched him more closely last night and he never tried to go past his defender and cross with his left. Can anyone remember him making a pass with it? As opposed to KWP who seems equally comfortable with either.
  13. He saved a goal. Lord Duckhunter described it as an interception.
  14. We’ve been through this before. Many times. This just reinforces what I said about “misleading statistics”.
  15. Ivan Golac used to be a close neighbour and we had many chats about football. He said that he always like to keep three up front when defending corners as it meant that the opposition had to have at least four players to cover them.
  16. Much improved in the second half.
  17. Also the African Cup of Nations, perhaps.
  18. Indeed he did. https://www.squawka.com/en/features/famous-footballers-acl-injury-recoveries/#:~:text=Alan Shearer,£3.6m from Southampton.
  19. That’s your definition. Coming out to snatch the ball off the feet of a striker who’s through on goal is also a save.
  20. I’ve said this before but our style of walking football is never going to get the blood racing.
  21. Too close for comfort though. Any team can fluke a goal at any time and one unlucky bounce can cost you a win. But the more important point is that there is no need for it to be like this. Being ‘well on top’ does not mean passing the ball around in your own half just trying to be too clever. I lost count of the number of times that we carelessly lost possession inside our own half. A better team would have punished us.
  22. Literally not true.
  23. That has to be a foul on the keeper. Not for it’s intensity but because there is a separate category for ‘preventing the keeper from releasing the ball’.
  24. Or how you can record it on Virgin Media to watch later?
  25. I would
