There is a point where the signing players at "your level" is not going to improve the team. Every team with ambition requires continuous improvement or you risk stagnation. At some point, maybe not this season, maybe not next, to go forward (or even stay at the same level) we will need to buy players which would be perceived by some "wow factor" level.

Is there a limit to what can be offered on a "free" signing? Or could it be that because Davis's signing on fee has effectively now gone to Rangers, he has been given an extra year to compensate?

I wouldn't have said so anymore. The average size of a footballer has gone up considerably in the last 5 or 6 years (like the general population). 6 ft would have been considered tall, whereas it's pretty average now. 5'9" is very much below average.

I've no doubt Clyne is a good player but the one thing that does slightly worry me is his lack of size for a defender. I remember Rickie isolating him at the back stick last season and can't help feeling the same sort of thing happening with the likes of Andy Carroll.
