Describe your Manhood with a Movie title

As Good As It Gets. The Pianist. The best one, though, involves a bit of a cheat search through Disney films, to find an obscure film from 1972. Run, Cougar, Run! -
Amusing article on Lambert and Lallana (from a Hammer)
FloridaMarlin replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Fareham Hammer? Who describes Lallana as being from Ringwood, Southampton. Hmmmmm. I'm thinking not the sharpest knife in the box. Last time I looked, Fareham is closer to Southampton than Ringwood. -
I like the blocks of flats with holes in them. Very Miami Vice. Will we be required to turn up on matchday in silk jackets with the sleeves rolled back, pastel shade trousers, and Bass Weejun loafers or espadrilles with no socks?

Whoever comes in will have to work with the players they have got, a squad of players who most judges think are not good enough. Even the best coach in the world can only effect a limited improvement. Whoever goes there is on a hiding to nothing. Those on here who think we didn't do enough in the summer or transfer window to improve the squad should be grateful that REading did even less than us. Unlike saggy chops, they haven't got any scope to improve the squad at this time, and it really is a bizarre time to do it. Normally, if you don't sack a manager before the transfer deadline to give his replacement a chance to bring in some players, it's a sign a club is sticking with the manager for good or ill unti lthe end of the season......

Beatts once said that even in his prime, he hardly ever went into a game what he would want to describe himself as 100% fit. In fact, he reckoned that in all his time in the Premier League with Saints, he was fully fit - without the effect of a knock from a previous game, twinges in muscles, pain in his ankle - in about a quarter of his games.

Oxford. they love the Dreaming Spires and the university buildings - Christ Church, Sheldonian Theatre, Radcliffe Camera, Bodleian Library, etc.

"Away fans streamed on to the pitch at full time". Isn't that also called a pitch invasion, and should attract sanctions? Photo of Rocha celebrating with a female fan - others might call it copping a feel.

This. The problem with Citizen Journalists is that they want their cake and to be able to scoff it. They want the trappings of journalism by expressing their views and shout from the rooftops about freedom of expression, but they don't want the responsibilities that accompany proper journalism. Journalists are taught the libel laws very early on in their training so that they do not cost their employer large sums of money. It is no defence to say of Hall "He is not a professional journalist" because that's what he set himself up as and wants to be viewed as. The law makes no distinction between professional journalists and Citizen Journalists, it assumes that if you want to express your views, then it is your responsibility to ensure that you know enough of the law not to libel somebody. In any case, you do not have to be a journalist to libel somebody. Anybody making a defamatory statement about a person and transmitting that to a third person can be sued for libel. It doesn't have to be in a newspaper or on a website. Transmitting the statement could be in something as simple as an email or a letter. The UK defamation laws are unfair in many respects, and although designed to protect a person's reputation from unfair or untrue attack, invariably have been hijacked by those with the money able to defend their reputation. Those threatened with action will always play the Freedom of Expression card, but the libel laws do allow for that. People are allowed to express their opinion, but that opinion must not be passed off as fact, and the opinion must be honestly held and based upon facts. As VFTT said, if Hall can prove the facts he has based his assertions on, he has nothing to worry about. What he can't do is squeal that the libel laws do not apply to him as he is not a professional journalist.

It's standard practice not to pay up sacked managers' contracts in one lump sum. First of all, it buys his silence by making sure the manager adheres to any Non Disclosure Agreement. Give him all the money in one lump and he's got no reason to keep his moth shut. Secondly, some managers actually prefer it like that. It means that have a monthly salary coming in and find it better for budgeting purposes. I should say, at this point, that I'm not a big fan of NDAs.

Rather ironic considering they only actually ended up paying about £5m to build it as they went into administration shortly after it opened... It was the way the Foxes fiddled admin to shed their debts (and thus provide other clubs with a potential model to do it) that was the driving force behind the current rules providing for a points deduction for going into admin. Other clubs were so livid that they shed their debt but still managed to keep their players that they decided it should not be allowed to happen again without some form of sanction.

To paraphrase McNae's Essential Law for Journalists (a book I assume he possesses, as any investigative journalist would ). A statement about a person is defamatory if it tends to do any of the following - Expose the person to ridicule, contempt or hatred Cause the person to be shunned or avoided Lower the person in the estimation of right-minded thinking members of society generally, or Disparage the person in his business, trade or office. The main defences available are; 1) Justification - this is when the matter complained of can be proved in court to be sustantially true. Always the hardest to prove because you have to have witnesses or other evidence (such as documentary). Can Hall prove what he wrote is true? If he can't he's shafted on this one. 2) Honest Comment (previously fair comment) - this protects published opinion but has to conform to certain conditions. a) The published comment must be the honestly held opinion of the writer b) The comment should be recognisable as opinion, ie, it should not be worded to be perceived as factual allegation c) The comment must be based on provably true facts d) Those facts must be alluded to or stated in what is published with the comment, unless the facts are so widely knownthat this is not necessary e) The subject commented on must be a matter of public interest. I would point you in the direction of Lowe v Times Newspapers, when our former esteemed chairman sued the pants off The Times for a comment piece written by Martin Samuel at the time of Dave Jones' departure. The Times claimed Fair Comment, but still lost, proving that you can never trust juries in libel cases. So I'm thinking that if Hall claims Honest Comment, he might struggle under (b) or ©. 3) Privilege - to paraphrase, these are comments made in Parliament, courts, public meetings, etc. This is what protects MPs when they make statements which are patently untrue about individuals. Porky Penny knows all about this, but this defence is not open to Hall. There are other defences against libel, such as Accord and Satisfaction and Offer of Amends (which mainly applies to accidental libel) which - without going into detail - mainly involve grovelling apologies, and offers of financial restitution. You cannot get legal aid for a civil case, although he may get a lawyer to take his case on a no-win, no fee basis, a bit like an ambulance chaser. Basically, he's screwed, unless he makes a grovelling apology and retraction, and even that might not be enough.

I'm turning Japanese, I really think so...
FloridaMarlin replied to Bath Saint's topic in The Lounge
It's a little pricey, but a trip on the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto is well worth it. Likewise, Nikko, north of Tokyo. It's the site of the mausoleum of the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Fantastic temples, pagodas and scenery. Sounds daft, but Tokyo Disneyland is also worth a trip. the idea of Disneyland may fill you with horror, but it's interesting to see how the Japanese deal with it. You probably won't be able to afford to do any actual shopping but a visit to Ginza's department stores - Mitsukoshi, Matsuya - is a real eye-opener. -
Speaking to a Skate supporting colleague today. He does actually have a sensible head that he wears and as a welathy businessman, does have strong links with Trust members. His words to me were; "I've paid my thousand pounds but the Trust hasn't got the money. Birch will only sell to the Trust if they have the money and he's giving them every chance, which is why there have been these adjournments (he was obviously unaware the PFA had caused the latest one). "But I think it's getting close to the end. Birch has asked Ashley Harris if they have the money to go immediately, and Harris told Birch he could not put his hand on his heart and say in all honesty that they have." Make of that what you will.

Echo all that's been said on here about West Ham. Not just hindsight, but I've said all along we will finish above them. There is always one team that goes into freefall from mid-table and it looks like them. They are one-dimensional, which is typical of Allardyce. They won games earlier in the season by physically bullying teams but the opposition have wise up how to play against them, and Fat Sam does not have a Plan B, unless it is to throw Carlton Cole up front to play alongside Carroll. Judging by the reactions of some of their players today, it wouldn't take much for them to go into meltdown. You just get the feeling it is an uhappy camp both on abd off the pitch. The fans who tolerated BFS while they were winning will turn on him as not playing The West Ham Way. Inside the camp, BFS clearly has his favourites like Nolan, Jaaskelainen, Taylor and other former Bolton accolytes and those players who perceive they are being frozen out by favourtism will spread disaffection. I think it's looking really encouraging.

Considering QPR paid £12m for Samba. He was shocking against Swansea, I've seen more mobile wardrobes. Samba didn't look interested, he looked like somebody glad that QPR triggered his release clause, but not happy yo be at the club. Another cracking Harry buy.

Regardless of any perceived anti-Saints bias, that is just a crap piece of writing. There is so much wrong with it, it is difficult to know where to begin. I particularly liked this - "The highlights reel will blush." No it won't. It can't. Does he actually sit back and give any thought to what he has actually said?

What are the nice areas around Southampton, Winchester?
FloridaMarlin replied to Spudders's topic in The Lounge
Hamble. Nice village area, loads of pubs, cobbled High St leading down to the waterfront, international yacthing centre, loads of Yachtie Totty. -

http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/eastney-barracks-return-on-cards-for-pompey-1-4753213 Oh dear. The story offers so many possibilities to write your own punchline (Cockleshell Gardens, anyone?) but as usual the devil is in the detail as to how desperate they have become. "The arrangement will see Guy Whittingham’s men change, eat and use the newly-installed gym facilities at Fratton Park on training days. When did this happen? Where did the money come from to install new gym facilities? Do the hard-pressed creditors know that while they're waiting for their cash, the likes of Rocha and Ertl will be racking up the miles on new exercise bikes which certainly don't come cheap? The first bit could provide fun, as well. The players will change at Fatpipe Park, get in their cars or cram into a rusty oold Ford Transit minibus, and drive to Cockleshell Gardens, train and then drive back. Tyro League football anyone? "The barracks is nowadays known as the Cockleshell Community Sports Club. It is closed to the general public, although is used by Meon Milton FC." I don't know it, but it smacks to me of an attempt to give a former surplus-to-requirements defence establishment a new lease of life as a community facility with every connotation of that you can think of on Portsea Island. Perhaps there's also a player deal with Meon Milton FC whereby p****y get some of their players. "On Friday, the Blues trained on the 4G surface at South Downs College after hopes of training at Eastney were ended by the weather." So the pitches at Cockleshell Cove are crap and flood when it rains, and they are basically going cap in hand to any organisation that will have them. They are homeless nomads. This is the legacy that Redknapp and others left them with. My, that FA Cup win was worth it.

Wigan 2-2 SAINTS /// Post-Match Reactions
FloridaMarlin replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Wigan's equaliser was mainly down to Shaw not pushing out. This is the best young left-back in the country, playing in the Premier League at 17 but he's still learning his trade. So why don't all the bed-wetters on here pin all the blame on him? -
