Plenty of people did just that in the championship. I remember several times saying I didn't rate Hoolivled and he was error prone. People said he was better than Fonte and when I pointed out that they didn't gel as a pair and that Fonte looked poorer because Hooliveld wasn't a good centre half I was told I was trolling. Hooliveld was a late window panic buy when we failed to land a number of our targets, we got away with it in the championship but it was pretty evident even then he wasn't up to the premier league. But people liked him because he clapped the fans, got a couple to goals and put a few funny things on twitter. Anyone that pointed out he wasn't a very good defender felt the fury of the forum.
