Don't be put off by the title but 'Up Pompey' is a book that I am currently reading and it's really rather good! An American sportswriter grew tired of the usual American sports and spent a year in England looking at the Premier league - he decided to adopt Portsmouth because he once lived in Portsmouth, USA. It gives a really good insight into football and the crowds through the eyes of an outsider - e.g. 'I have never hard the English word f--- used in so many creative forms. I herd it as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction. preposition, pejorative, subjunctive and maybe even a gerund.' I don't think that I have ever seen a goalie penalised for holding onto the ball too long - they rarely get rid of the ball within six seconds, though.

1992 - it does seem odd watching the goalie pick the ball up from a back pass! Going even further back you were allowed to barge the keeper if he had the ball in his hands!

It was a terrible match (the two goals apart) but sometimes football matches are dull and uninspiring - most people realise that and don't go attacking the manager and/or players when there isn't champagne football to celebrate.
