They don't have players on huge wages. I think that's what's holding us down. People like Forster, Prowse, Austin being paid bucket loads. These new sides that come up will have quite modest wage bills in all respects.
-
Sometimes people get more excited when they see £25m/30m etc. We have been shocking at our 'record deals'. (Carrillo, Boufal, Gaston...) Maybe we should rename it to - ''Southampton Sign Danellie Inges for £30m" If he stays fit, he's a complete improvement to us. The problem I have is 'if', and also why it's all last minuite.com. Maybe as someone suggested - Liverpool have been playing games and have shelved their big asking price at the last min.

It's seems more clear by the day that FFP is totally holding us back right now (with all these huge contracts). I don't believe we've not got any money to spend, we just aren't allowed to. That's why FFP has always been an utter farce in my opinion. What is fair about not letting the 'smaller' teams strengthen their squads? How is that levelling the playing fields? The clubs with money can just happily fliter cash away anyway, breach FFP and then pay - to them - the tiny fine. Joke.

To be fair, these 'underwhelming' deals sometimes work out better than the mega money additions. I remember Jos being seen as seriously underwhelming when we signed him, but he was so critical to us that season.

We've known we've needed a striker since 2016, so it's a bit odd that we're having to submit an extention. Bit last-ditch, when it shouldn't have been. Still have absolutley no confidence in who is running our recruitment at the moment. We needed another striker though, without question. Glad they finally got one and if fit he's a hell of a lot better than Carillo, we just need to hope he stays fit and we don't end up with a season of Ings and Austin in the treatment room! Still, it's a cheap gamble I guess.

I used to enjoy deadline day to be honest. Sky have killed it for me though, can't bring myself to watch that. ''Sky sources understand''. ''We understand'' ''My sources are telling me'' Seriously, i wish they'd tone it down. Trying to make news out of no news.

The 4 signings we made are positive for sure, we got them done early. My main gripe is our forward options though. In recent years we always seem to leave an area or two completely devoid of quality. This summer it's been up front. I cannot bring myself to be positive at the thought of Long, Austin and Gabbiadini as our main striking options. There is not enough goals in that front line, that was proven last year and the year before (when we sold Mane and Pelle). The club seem oblivious to that though. Our midfield is a bit mish-mash, we're lacking real quality in there (need Lemina or Hoj to actually step up this year). The central defence unfortunately looks very, very slow. Our failure to score will put so much pressure on our CB's.....as per previous years.

SD: Clarets are down to 17 fit and available outfield players for tomorrow's game.

I think Wolves are on course to win this window.... Close to signing Leander Dendonker and Zinchenko ahead of tomorrow. Add that to Moutinho, Jiminez, Jota, Patrico, Bolly, Johnny. And they already have Neves and Helder Costa.... Exciting times to be a Wolves fan for sure! -
If we were about to sign anyone, you'd have heard something by now. Safe to say that we are actually done I think. Another season of Long it is then.
-
Seemingly this is the going rate for 'Top' players now. Anywhere between 70-150m. Surely it's going to go pop soon.

He's not the answer though, if we're honest.

A Cedric sighting..!
-
I can't see how it's a case that we have to sell to raise revenue, I think it is to do with FFP and our wage ceiling, well I hope so anyway.... If we could have got rid of Fraser it would have helped a lot.....but given he's still here, I think it's pretty clear that we're paying him obscene wages which no club are prepared to match. That leaves us in a pretty crappy situation in terms of being able to add additions. If it was just down to selling to raise funds, then we’d have seen the likes of Tragett, Gallagher and Reed go IMO.
-
I'd love to hear our owner’s plans for the future, just something, anything. It feels as if we're just floating through days with no actual idea what our plan is or what our achievable goals are. If us supporters are unsure, you can bet the players are as well.
-
As soon as the quotes came out about him being 'sick' is when the alarm bells started ringing for me. No sightings of him at all in pre-season, no OS photos or interviews. They made a big thing about Maya's return, but diddly squat about Cedric. (Reminds me of Fonte’s return after the Euros) They'll keep it hush, but I think it seems as if he's pushing for some sort of move whilst we flap around trying to work out what to do.
-
Young, english, 4-5 years left on his contract, over 100 PL apperances. £10m? Have watford been on the sauce? £30m+. (I'd expect a similar price to Greleash or Maddison if we were to sell him).
-
I'd be surprised if any decent club would want him, would have been quite content with us selling him and bringing in a replacement. Obviously we've left it all too late to do anything about it, so we're now in a situation with an unhappy player sitting out for weeks whilst we play LB's and CM's at right back. Unless the club have the clever idea of selling him to a European Club at some point in the next few weeks, thus leaving the club without a right back.

The so called experts premiership predictions for 2018/2019
S-Clarke replied to Pilchards's topic in The Saints
There will be 3 leagues IMO. The top 6, far and away from the rest (Liverpool, City Chelsea, Arsenal, Utd, Spurs). The middle teams who have a shot at a top 7, EL place (Everton, West Ham, Leicster, Palace, Burnley) And then the rest in a slog until the end - ourselves, Newcastle, Watford, Brighton, Cardiff, Huddersfield, Fulham, Borunemouth, Wolves -

Mateo Kovacic on loan to Chelsea. Nice move that. -
That was something to kill some time! Got 84%... It's kinda depressing, as it shows how good we were 3 years ago....and how bog average we are now. But yeah, doesn't compare to our Championship wilderness years. James, Gillet...crikey.

No idea what to expect after yesterday, feel pretty deflated by it all at the mo. Maybe stick Vesterguard up front for the giggles. Something to do. Will probably prove more of a threat than anyone else. I love Yoshida, but the fact he's being held up now as our best CB shows up our transfer dealings over the last 2 years. Vesterguard could be good, but he looks so slow at the back. Hoedt and Vesterguard together look like a recipe for some hammerings to me. Another recruitment masterstroke?
-
Given how he played yesterday, I just cannot understand why teams like City court him. He's got talent, but a really screwed mentality. He will probably never fullfil his potential.
-
It was a positive start to the window I thought, signing an attacking wide player, a number 10 type midfielder, a tall and dominant CB. A top GK prospect (assuming Forster had a suitor). All looked positive. But we needed more in attack (a bit of a refresh in attack if we're being honest), there's a glaring gap for a number 9 in this team. Anyone can see that. So, failure to address our goal scoring, which has hindered us so much over the last two seasons, has the potential to make this another utterly disastrous transfer window. Resorting to having to loan our last two record signings out (Carillo and Boufal) says it all for me. Recruitment has been absolutely shambolic for way, way too long now. I have to say that our lack of pace, lack of power, lack of strength up top will hinder us. Austin will be injured for periods, can put that in now. Long will score 1 goal, and Gabbiadini may get 5 or whatever. That's not enough, never has been enough and never will be enough. How are Bournemouth able to spend £27m on a player without selling anyone? Can anyone shed any light on that? And also, if anyone is able to shed any light on WTF our new owners add to this club, I will be very grateful! At the moment, I've never seen a more pointless takeover in my entire life. I didn't think Kat would sell us up the river, but every day that goes by it seems as if the only reason we were sold were for her benefit so she could get a quick influx of money to help her. Now we’ve been saddled with debt to a random Chinese nobody who hasn’t got the foggiest what he’s bought. This club is in a right old mess behind the scenes.

Saints vs Borussia Mönchengladbach - Match Thread
S-Clarke replied to wessex saint's topic in The Saints
That was as worrying as the Augsburg game from last pre-season. We just weren't there, didn't offer a threat, couldn't contain them. An absolute waste of my afternoon. I actually feel sad when I see Hoedt try to play football. What on earth did we ever see in him, other than him being a complete clubmsy oaf with legs too long for his brain. Another pointless 'season ticket' benifit ticked off. Now I just have to wait for the exclusive news letter.
