Palace 0-2 Saints. Wild celebration reaction thread.
S-Clarke replied to Shroppie's topic in The Saints
An amazing run of away form, which has moved us to a position of looking up rather than down. I can't quite believe we're 9th, it's ridiculous considering where we were 7 weeks ago - insane turn around. Credit to Ralph who has energised us again and the players for responding. Take a bow Jack Stephens though, he’s the biggest revelation in this turn around. Where on earth has he been hiding? Christ, if we sorted our home form out, we'd be up there challenging for Europe. Maybe we have a chance to sort that out in the coming weeks? Next 3 home games in the league - Burnley Newcastle Villa And then West Ham and Norwich sandwiched around them. We've got a chance here to give ourselves a really comfortable end to the season. -
That LD Sports thing still absolutely stinks. More so than it did, because even these months on it's still a company of nothingness who can apparently afford to sponsor a topflight English team. And they’re Chinese. and our owner is Chinese. Let me think a second. Yeah, it's not dodgy at all. Fully legit sponsorship deal with no links to our ownership. God, once we get that stupid little man Gao out things will start looking up. Until then, it's going to be quite a lot of dodgyness.

We don't have the mobility or pace in the spine of the team to deal with players such as Traore or Antonio, it really highlights our weaknesses when you see players such as those running at us. We played 'ok', but not that amazingly. We played a hell of a lot better last weekend to be fair and got a deserved win. We did get two good goals first half, but it felt like we'd never really got massive momentum and were just strolling along a little. 2nd half Wolves woke up and we struggled to contain them, their pace and power was just too much for our limited spine. It's frsutrating because of where we were first half....! But it's a bump back down to earth, and the next two games will probably be further nails in that bump. We've got some games coming up during Feb and March which should give us enough though, but my worry is a few of them are at home - and our home form is still horrific. Until we sort that out, we will continue to struggle to pull away.

It must be so frustrating for Ralph. He said on a couple of times we 'MUST' do something, and now he's having to wind that back and tone down a little as the club are once again failing him. We will get to the summer with the same holes we have now, but with even more holes to try and fill as other players leave. Is it a case of just wait until the summer and do an entire rebuild? If that would happen, I'd probably be content, but we all know it won't and we'll be left even more short than we are now. Gao has really taken us to another level.
-
That change in stance, and the fact we haven't got in anyone 'early' is kinda suggestive that we're not getting anyone in. We're being prepared now! He must be ****ed if that's the case, he made it quite clear that's what he wanted. Is he about to be let down again by this faceless Gao?
-
Do you really see Danso being worth £50m at any point? I don't. I reckon he will be your typical journeyman centre back, and that would be an expensive £15m! So i wouldn't go anywhere near him.

That Watford home game should have been one of those to aim for, they screwed that right up. They look shot at the moment. I doubt their fan base are any more confident going into these next 3. I'd bet Norwich to beat them to be honest, just a feeling I have. They're terrible at the moment.

We were very poor, now we're pretty good. What changed?
S-Clarke replied to norwaysaint's topic in The Saints
Settled team is the key, no more questions about why x isn’t getting in the squad, why are we playing x there instead etc. The team picks itself, and most importantly it's balanced. What has also helped is our good run has coincided at a time when fixtures are close together, so it's given us an opportunity to really gather some momentum and accumulate points over a short period of time. Ings has benefited from a good run like this and looks as fit as he's ever looked. I think we've also managed the fitness of the squad well over the last few weeks, so kudos to the backroom staff too. -
With Kane out, it would be stupid not to include him and give him a run out. The guy is full of it right now, a headache for the best defenders as he just pops up everywhere. Look how alert he was when he hit that shot against the bar, he just never stops buzzing around right now. Having someone like that up front is great for any team and England will beneift - if he comes from a 'small club' who gives a ****.
-
It's hard to want to change too much, it'll just be what the fitness shows to be honest. Back 4 I think will clearly stay the same, that works and has formed a solid basis to the surprise of most of us. I think this will be a tough game though, Wolves are a tough nut to crack. They generally don't lose too many games or let in too many goals, so we're going to have to be very good to get a win I think. It's really handy that our good form has come when we have games in quick succession like this, as it means we don't really lose that momentum as there are no imminent international breaks. We've picked the best time of the season to have this sort of run.

If Spurs buy him and we get millions for him then we're laughing, alot. I have no idea in what universe Spurs would think he's a good option for them at all. He needs some time lower league.
-
“Jamie [Vardy] is fine. He unfortunately missed the game at the weekend, but he trained on Sunday and since that, so he’s absolutely fine.
-
Not entirley sure who would want him to be honest. NPC club on loan?
-
It tones down the initial rage at selling VVD for e.g., with the idea that we wanted to do it early so we had all month to reinvest etc - it suddenly deflects fans anger and makes them think more positively, and the terrace chat becomes more around exciting additions as opposed to who we lost. Keep stringing those out for a few weeks until the ''how difficult it is'' lines start coming out, and by this time the actual rage has died down from the sale and the club have engineered the fans mood. Then comes frustrated acceptance, but not the pure anger they’d have had if the club admitted they weren’t spending the VVD fee when we sold him.
-
I doubt it, they're on 30 points and have already played a bundle of games. They've managed it well so far. They went 12 games unbetween between September and December! I can't see them dropping into the bottom half.
-
I remember the season we smashed Sunderland 8-0, when the reverse came around no one expected anything other than a win. Sunderland beat us. I'm not giving up hope, esp. given how we've played over the last month. We seem to cause anyone problems at the top end right now, and we seem suitably strong at the back. Let's see, but we go into it with optimism. We started December on 12 points, we start January on 25 points. I mean, what the hell.
-
Bournemouths signings have been utterly dreadful (their big buys anyway). Solanke, Ibe, Danjuma, even Lerma hasn't been amazing. Their success is still produced by the core of Wilson, Brooks, Fraser, King, Cook, Ake etc. Their big buys haven't really improved them at all, which for a club the size of Bournemouth has the potetential to be catastrophic.
-
Cedric will go at the end of the season, he's said as much. We will probably sign his replacement this January and rotate for the rest of this season. (Jokham Mahle i reckon)
-
Absolutly proven me wrong, didn't look capable and was out of his depth. I think he has a bit more protection in and around him, but still he's proven me wrong and taken charge.

Another really, really good display. I didn't see any of this coming when I left at HT back in November. We pressed well for the majority of the game, we had more than one chance and we limited them to very, very little. Really pleased to see Ings full of it, not just up front, but he's everywhere. He looks fit, hungry and really on it all over the pitch. That's what we paid the money for and I'm pleased he's finally showing it and he's finally in a place of decent fitness which we always worried about. Redmond is sitll a bit frustrating this season, but was ok yesterday - he just doesn't seem as much of a threat as he was last year, not quite sure why but we'll see what happens as the season pans on. Couple of tricky games coming up, but there are still points to be had if we play as we have been. Still loads of work to do and hopefully the coming month offers Ralph the possiblity to plug some obvious gaps so we can continue to climb and not get dragged back down. For the record, this time last year we were 18th on 16 points. 9 points better off and 6 places higher is really good progress which I didn't see coming in November.
-
I'll be honest and say that I'm stunned by our recovery since that 0-9. We're still not full of great players, but what it's shown is that everyone still believes in the manager and what he's trying to do. I can't imagine how mentally challenging things were after that 0-9. This is why I was never for ditching Ralph, it just made no sense - we weren't going to get anyone better. The players let everyone down, the manager started to panic and all hell broke loose. But I always believed he was a good manager sold a short straw with his squad, I just want him to be given the oppertunity to continue to evolve it - esp. the back 4 and midfield.
-
The 2018 window was the worst, holy christ that was bad. So much spin, so much hope, absolutely nothing provided. We shelved a decent portion of the VVD fortune on a player recommended by a manager who was on his last legs! Honestly, how is that a club operating any sort of due diligence or financial long-term planning. I thought we had the ‘Southampton way’? It was probably the worst way any professional club could ever operate in a transfer market. I'm glad both Ross and Les are no longer involved, they absolutely took the **** - especially Ross, he’s stealing a living.

We need an experienced defensive coach/co-ordinator/analyst
S-Clarke replied to derry's topic in The Saints
We just need better defenders, that's pretty much it. If we had VVD and Fonte at the back, with exactly the same coaches, we'd be winning games and keeping clean sheets. Our problem is we have the likes of Stephens now as a starter. -
He was ok, but that skied kick in the 92nd min was not good to see. This is the captain of the team, he totally lost it there with that swing. Doesn't help with the nerves of those around him!
-
He's a very poor player for this level, can't really get away from that. Incredibly limited. He tries hard and shows passion, but he's crap.
