From 8-0 Sunderland to 0-9 Leicester - a journey of decline
S-Clarke replied to manina-pub's topic in The Saints
What went wrong? Shameful recruitment first and foremost. On both players and management. We've sold a lot, generated a lot, but we have also spent that back out again in the main (at least the first year after Koeman). But the way the VVD money was wasted is nothing short of a criminal offence. Let's be honest. Lemina, Boufal, Carrillo, Vesterguard, Hoj, Ings, Armstrong, Bedenerak, Gabbiadini, Pied, Hoedt, Elyounoussi, Gunn. Jury still out on Adams and Mousa. Redmond is ok, but he’s not a world beater. But that's pretty much every signing (bug money, big wages) under the watch of Ross Wilson, and every one of those have offered us a fat zero in most cases. Given that they were replacements for Morgan, VVD, Tadic, Pelle, Mane etc – is it any surprise we’ve struggled? It's just a disaster and I don't know what we do to get out of this. -

I imagine he's another one on stupid wages, so we're stuck with just loaning him out for the next few years. I really hope karma bites that stupid scottish midget up the arse soon. -
I think Yoshida is a player who has shown heart, leadership and has some character about him - which is what 90% of the rest lack. The main problem with Yoshida is his ability, he's pretty rubbish if we're honest. He went from being a pretty decentish backup CB for us to being one we call out for on a regular basis, that in it's self speaks volumes about the continuous downgrading of our squad.
-
The first thing they should send out is a ****ing refund.
-
Yeah, I'm going to ignore this one I think.
-
If I'm honest, I think it's getting to the stage where it NEEDS to happen. We need some sort of 'flush', although given the amazing work done by our recruitment team re: contracts, that's probably impossible too.
-
You deserve something! I think you're mad! They didn't deserve any support in that 2nd half, so many left at HT (including myself). Never done that before, but sometimes you just need to make a stand and stop accepting utter ****e.
-
Exactly this, I hope most people can see this. But it's obviously the quick and easy call to say change a manager. But there is so so so much more wrong here. A broken club.
-
It's not so much the quality, there is certainly individual quality in the group – but it's the characters in the group. Their personalities, their attitudes, their psych setup - they're all as bad as each other. Not strong enough, not focused enough, too meek, not leaders and unfortunately proven losers. Sooner rather than later the curtain is coming down, we're just delaying the inevitable to be honest. I'd get rid of at least 9 of them and just invest again, well i say invest...not that we will.
-
Let's be honest, is there anyone who can make JWP or Hoj a leader? or make Vesterguard a defender? I doubt it. So, as has been the case for the last 3-4 years - we can keep changing the manager, and we will see a rinse/repeat process because it's the same ****ing group of loosers.
-
Let's be honest, is it the managers fault in the grand scheme? No. This is the worst group of players I've ever seen. I'm not talking about pure ability, more so about attitudes, character, leadership. There’s nothing in this group, just a meek mix of utter wimps. I dislike them so much. Hoj can **** off if he's a captain. He's been half the problem since he's been here. I hope he reads this too, and JWP. Meek and characterless, this signifies the entire group. Unfortunately Ralph just hasn't had the backing, anyone can see that. Well done to our horrific ownership.
-
Absolutely despise this stupid pathetic little man. Get the **** out of my club you utter ****.
-
I think we're gone. If you lose like that, then you're pretty much condemned in any season. We're dead on our feet with the most dislikeable and meek group of players we’ve ever, ever had. I do believe we’ve got a good manager there, but ultimately; he’s come in at the wrong time and has had absolutely zero backing. I'm not going to bother going through the match, as I left at HT so there's no point. But to lose 9-0 at any level suggests you are not good enough for said level, so I think that's the crux of it. The inevitable has been brewing for the last 3-4 years, and it will probably finally come to roost this year. I maybe naively felt as Ralph kept us up last year, the club would genuinely back someone who is a good manager – but alas, I was wrong. Underinvestment, uninterested owners and horrific scouting have put this club back 10+ years, and to think 4 years ago we were playing in the Europa League. That's a long way from us, and there's a long road back. First thing is to get rid of that utterly pathetic little man from our club, who is supposed to be our owner. Just get him out, by hook or crook. Get someone in who can sort out the utter mess he's created and then we may have something to move towards, but whilst he’s here the club is dying week by week. But as for this season, I think it's done. Hopefully this post is bounced at the end of the season and we can have a good old laugh, but somehow I doubt it.

Felt like a tourist game today, so many randoms in the crowd. Not sure if there were free tickets given out or something. **** game though, rubbish. Hoj again back to his talks a good game but can't deliver mode. Bertrand might as well have been on the bench, he was dreadful. I think we've rushed Redmond back, doesn't look quite there. Gunn needs to be dropped, absolutely awful communication AGAIN. Why can't we just throw Danso in the back 2...? He was supposed to be our 'CB' we waited so long for. I'd throw him in to be honest. Not much else to review, was pretty **** really.
-
What on earth is going through this dudes brain at the moment? Needs some time out.
-
I think he's a cracking coach with a good idea of how to approach games - he's just been sold a dud with this utterly horrific squad, let's be honest. It's ****. Full of absolute losers. I don't really rate Hoj, not a huge fan of Gunn. Betrand looks like he's had enough, JWP continues to flatter under any manager he ever plays for. Romeu is decent, but not top level. We just don't have top level players anymore, it's a cobbled together bunch of has beans and average players and there's no intention to improve on that because we've wasted so much money on utter ****. Don't blame the manager, blame the hand he's been dealt but the people running my club.
-
Ahhh why is this even a topic. Look at the squad that started, same team that struggled. He has not been backed to be honest, he must be royally ****ed. I would be. He could do so much more if he had decent owners to support him, but alas he's come to us at a time when we're owned by an absolute charlatan.
-
Thank **** for that, get rid of the loser.
-
Standard SFC injury mystery really. This will just roll on and on and on. No idea why we never put a figure on our players injuries.
-
So, Vesterguard, Elyounoussi, Carrillo, Hoedt That's 66m spent on dross. Honestly need to get Ross out of this club, he can't keep doing this to us.
-
It just feels like a common fan reaction and it frustrates me. Little bit of trouble and the knives are out, if I'm honest he has earned a hell of a lot of margin for error here given how he's made this dross squad perform. He's trying to find a solution in what is a horrible, horrible squad. And whilst he may have 'approved' the squad, I imagine it was reluctantly. He can't be happy with this team and the lack of backing he has had, let's be honest. I feel frustrated as I know he can do better with better players, but the ownership of the club won't let that happen, so he's having to find solutions with the crap he has. So we can either back the manager and let him carry on how he's doing, reality is that we're not a top half team. Or we can stamp our feet and demand more when the reality is that we're at our level right now.

He is an absolutley dreadful player and as long as he is in the side, we will ship goals. Another one who we need out of this club asap. -
Are people honestly having this debate? What on earth is wrong with fans? Just go onto our OS, have a look through our squad page, and then tell me how you'd do with this mismash of players. It will take a good few seasons to sort the squad out and rebuild this, we have been ruined by awful transfer windows over the last 3 years and we have been left with such a dreadful team - not just in quality, but with glaring gaps in positions. People criticising the manager are just clueless really. Do you expect this group to go and beat teams like Spurs? Because I don’t, we’re not very good – face it. Until we revamp this squad, we will continue to be pretty rubbish. We can't really revamp it though as we have no money, so we might as well back the manager who has performed bloody miracles to even get us where we are.
-
Surely having a right back at right back, and a left back at left back is the sensible approach for this one? Instantly brings balance to the side. Redmond in from the start obviously. I don't want to see Vesterguard up against Kane or Moura, so Yoshida please
