Thanks everyone. We decided to stay for a weekend at the site to mull over whether it was for us. Whilst we had an absolutely fabulous time (and Tight Fit live at the club was a top night!) we've decided against ownership for now. We decided that we'd rather rent a caravan every couple of months than have the problem of looking after our own! Also, the caravan we had was going to be single glazed and no central heating.. something that didn't appeal after a breezy weekend in a Caravan with all the mod-cons. Maybe we'll revisit the idea in a couple of years time but then the 20% VAT on caravans would have come in. Hey ho! Thanks again to everyone that took the time to respond. Much appreciated.

Yeah, talked to a couple of the BMW sales folks and it was a 50/50 on VDC. Looking at reviews online though VDC is really recommended. As the car with auto and all the gubbins is coming to 43+k I'd much rather throw in another £980 for VDC than have the missus complain about the pot holes all the time! What mpg are you geting from the A5? I only got about 30mpg on the A5 S-line 3l but the BMW did 45+mpg (and drove them just as hard) As for the height in the drivers seat, must admit that I didn't notice it in the BMW at all as an issue, did in the A5 but also now realise that the Merc CLC that I've got has the same issue as the A5!! Hey ho, car ordered, can't wait for it to arrive!

Well, he appears to have come back as a 'senior member' now - not sure if that's compensation from Mr Grant

Of course it'll be on...

No? Really? Hey ho. Admin, can you lock?

Be warned - SkyGo doesn't work with ICS at the moment. Was working on Gingerbread with my HTC Sensation but after the upgrade SkyGo says my device is not supported. ARGH

Summary: Merc 250D - too much of an old mans car for me Jag XF - quite nice but a bit small for me and also it only did 30MPG average A5 Sportback - very very quick, would lose my licence within a week I'm 6'4" so unfortunately there was little headroom BMW 525d M Sport - perfect, huge and quick So, just been to the BMW garage in Portsmouth (wrong time to visit as Eastern Road was packed at 14:00. Must be quite a few Derby fans ) Was going to go for a blue one, but now decided on a Titantium Silver M sport with spoiler (very small one), Lumbar support, auto gearbox, black leather, VDC (suspension control), brushed aluminum trim as extras (does p*ss me off a bit that the extras add 10% to the car!) Will order it tonight - woo hoo Like these pics but silver not white ....

Faster return - not there unless you can lose it all - high risk. However, Ben Silk, Rouse Ltd on Isle of Wight I use as my IFA. Worth a chat. http://www.rouseifa.co.uk Suggest you go for mid-term investment (depending on how much you have to invest and how quickly you'd need the money in a emergency). China, South America... good options at the mo.

either: "He got off a guilty charge" or "He left a boxer scarred"

You weren't joking about the MPG on short trips! Done around 15 miles in the test car since it arrived this morning and got

Think you just have to read his follow up article below to see what a nice chap he really is and why he should have been let in for a free http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/pompey-past/pompey-have-last-laugh-after-gauntlet-of-hate-1-3715779

Thanks for the replies so far. To answer a few of the questions, we're expecting to probably rent it out at some peak times (hopefully to work colleagues) during the year to cover the rent for the site. This site has multiple swimming pools, evening entertainment, ice rink, leisure centre, kids clubs etc. so enough to keep everyone busy and all included in the yearly maintenance costs (6 adult passes - 12+ and then as many under 11 passes as you want). We have the kids every other weekend so could rent it out every other week. Family and friends would use it at other times. Finally, there was an issue with flooding at the site / Selsey itself but the EA have just put in 15M sea defenses. Question is, do we keep the cash sitting in a savings account making not much interest or do we put it into a caravan for a bit of fun in the knowledge that we would probably not make it all back again but the kids would (hopefully) have fantastic memories as some of the replies have already shown!

Lived on a 65ft barge for over a year many years ago. Was a great time but not huge amount of entertainment apart from feeding the ducks for 7 and 10 year olds Also, hated the pumping out bit.....

Wondering if any SWF folks own a static caravan and can share their experiences? We've just been looking this weekend, I've got two kids aged 7 and 10 who I think would love the site we're looking at (West Sands at Selsey). We're looking at a 3 bed 12 ft wide static but want to know if there are things to watch out for and what pros and cons anyone can tell us about. Stayed in many a park and enjoyed it with the kids but owning a caravan is completely different! We'd be looking at renting it out as well to cover some if not all of the site rental... Thanks Mike

The lads 7th birthday, got a new ball from the Saints shop and got most of the players to sign it pre-match. Then found out he was on the TV FLS a couple of times. Only thing missing was 3 points to make it the perfect bday. Hmmm

Nuff said.

Cheers for the feedback. Unfortunately I'm only allowed to test drive 3 cars (but have someone booked 4 ). Also, we've just bought the wife a Peugeot 307 cc which is a lovely car so no issues with Peugeot

Thanks for the advice, I'll check out the A6 as well and see what kind of monthyl cost that is as well. The A5 test drive is booked in as well and I'm interest in your comment about it wearing on you if you were doing a lot of miles... will bear that in mind. Thanks

Thanks for the warning - have also waiting nearly a month for Jaguar to get back to me to arrange a test drive so not that impressed with their service (if that's the way they treat potential new customers then where does that leave existing ones!).
-
Thanks Ken - exactly the type of info I was looking for. Test drive the XF next weekend so will check out boot and view. As for the rear wheel drive, that's what I have on the Merc at the moment and during the snow last year I just had to make sure that Mrs TS was in the car when we went out. She's very good at pushing in the snow

OK, so currently have a Merc 220 CLC at CO2 of about 180. Need to change the car now for a new one (hard times huh?). Test driving at the moment and I'm looking at CO2 of around 130 which means I can afford a 40k car roughly (i.e. same tax and PUC as the Merc). So, test driving the following: Mercedes E250 Cdi BlueEFFICIENCY Sport Automatic BMW 525D M Sport Jaguar XF 2.2 Premium Luxury 190PS Audi AUDI A5 SPTBK 5St 12 3.0D S-LINE MUL Any comments on pros and cons. As it's a company car not bothered about depreciation but have to have the car for 4 years. Only driven the Merc and BMW so far and BMW wins hands down currently. I'm after an Automatic desiel and have two older kids now so need a 4 door... Would be interested in anyones views of owning one of these cars or of others I should consider that I haven't so far.... Thanks
