Back in Victorian times, when writing a letter, a capital letter would be used to emphasise an individual word. Nowadays we use italics or bold. Read Sir Isambard Kingdom Brunel's letters to his chief Engineer, Daniel Gooch, it really brings the letters to life and should be introduced back into our written language, although not quite to the extent of using it on each word.:smt039
