For me it was 50/50 between what you've said and the curriculum. Take Geography (a subject i'm interested in) when I was at school it was very boring - counting cars and timing how long it took a stick to float under a bridge on a field trip. Geography should be about learning capital cities and mountain ranges and stuff like that.

This. You're still at that naive age, but you will start learning fast that the world is full of utter c*nts. I would suggest you spend year 1 in a hall of residence. It's the best way to find like minded people whilst having your own room. Then in year 2 you will have had time to spot the freeloaders and sly c*nts - the sort who don't buy their round.

If you think about it what Britain did in India is how you should run a business. 1. You need good logistics and communications. 2. You need to empower the natural leaders to work for you.
  6. Labour left us with the largest budget deficit in the EU. If tough decisions had not been made Britain would have been spoken of in the same breath as Spain and Portugal. We are now out of that danger zone.

Of course. It's a period we should all be proud of because Britain was the superpower of the world, and lessons can be learnt from how we achieved this. China is employing the methods in Africa as we speak.

I think you'll find the conservatives have saved the country from the public sector. I was delighted to see that Manchester council are cutting 20% of the work force because we all know that councils have created countless made up jobs over the past 13 years. It's about time tax payers got value for money.

I agree. Also the curriculum needs cleansing of its left wing tree hugging bias. Take History as an example. Students should be taught about how good the British Empire was. This is a very important lesson as if children are taught about the British Raj for example they can learn a great deal about becoming sucessful in business.

  14. You tell em Alpine. I think you make some excellent points.

Apologies, I didn't realise that a SIPP was a pension plan. I'm sorted in that department as i'm in a very good final salary scheme and pay an additional amount per month into an AVC scheme whose fee's are payed for by my employer. Unfortunately it's rate of interest follows the base rate. Not so much of an issue at this stage, but just prior to retirement when the pot is built up it'd be a disaster at 0.5%. That said you get tax relief on contributions and in addition it's incorporated into the overal lifetime allowance. I have already spoken to a pensions adviser and once the 25% threshold is achieved (the ammount that can be taken as a tax free lump sum) i'll cease making contributions. I'm fairly happy with what should be the safe BOE base rate AVC (it should be back north of 3% in a few years time) and don't want to gamble in this area. The scheme's trustees are currently looking into offering a shares based AVC and i'll consider it if it happens and after seeking advice and looking into it myself.

I have a share account (non ISA), but at this stage in my 5 year plan (it sounds corny ha ha) i'm happy to seek out ISA-able shares. I don't want to pay CGT when I don't have to.

VOD, NYO, CNE. Have very high hopes for NYO over the next few years... Cashed in CRND. £1,000 profit will pay for a new TV. I felt it was being ramped and the Acid water discharge/mine flooding problems concerned me. It could still fly (and i think it will rise a lot more) but i had a niggling doubt so decided not to be greedy.

CRND (my hot tip for 2011) is up 54% so far this year. Easy money. Also check out KLG (another of my fancies) up to 7.5 from 6.6 last week when I suggested, and Namibian Resources up 100%. BPC also primed and about to fly....
  25. Hope we win, but decided against going because i'd rather watch a league game instead.
