A couple of times a month a small group of us meet in the local for a philosophy session. It is normally quite light hearted and a good excuse for a few pints at lunchtime. To date we have been given thought experiments to discuss, normally no longer than a page or two of reading with a discussion in the next session. Our esteemed group leader has now decided that we should read through Plato’s Republic together. I managed to avoid it as a youngster but it has finally caught up with me. We are due to start on it this week. Anyone read it? Is it as dry as it sounds?

Just stop and think for a minute. If there is a DNR order then “ the state” will not try to save a life. It follows that someone who is soon to die, possibly in distress, would prefer to die in their own terms. Can you understand that there is a huge difference between the state taking a life out of revenge and the state helping someone to end their own life on their own terms when their time is rapidly coming to an end? Would you be happier if they just took their own lives and caused extra distress to both themselves and their loved ones? The state isn’t making the decision. The individual is.

Anyone with any level of intelligence would understand that my point was about the amount of prominent airtime he was given against other news stories that were bigger at the time than his actual crimes. As I said at the time, his crimes were dealt with in the magistrates court. More serious crimes are dealt with in the Crown Court. I think you will struggle to find anyone with any reasonable level of understanding that will say that he committed the worse crime in the world. He didn’t murder anyone. He didn’t rape anyone. Would you say that is crime was worse than murder or rape?

Taking a life for revenge is ok but not out of mercy? My position is based on a person dying within 6 months anyway and making that choice for themselves. Yours is not.

For me there are three very strong arguments against bringing back capital punishment. 1. There is no way back from an unsafe conviction once the accused has been executed. 2. Capital punishment has never been a failsafe deterrent. 3. If we believe that it is wrong to take a life, it is also wrong for the state to take a life. As for knife crime, it needs to be treated now as an emergency. More stop on search on youths (not just black youths). Stronger measures taken for those found to be in possession. Tougher measures taken in schools against disruptive children. Greater resources put into out of school activities for youths. Better policing over access to social media amongst the young. So many areas that need to be addressed but it needs to be done now and it needs to take on a much higher level of urgency.

Should we all provide medical certificates so that we ensure that we do not inadvertently take the mick out of someone’s previously unknown medical conditions? The problem with that is that it still wouldn’t show us that you believe in conspiracy theories and even make them up as you go along to suit your narrative.
