The Starmer Years - Can The New Broom Sweep Clean?

According to the journo from The Telegraph on QT the other week the media in this country is pretty much all left biased. I just wish Fiona Bruce had asked him to name all of these left biased media outlets.
-
If you are not interested, why bother to respond? Given the amount of right based media outlets in this country there is a worry about where it might end up - not that you would be bothered by another right leaning newspaper.

What on earth are you talking about and who has said that Trump is a war monger. If anything he is a total bottle job and looks likely to let Putin have what he wants rather than to stand up to him. Ukraine have been fighting under the restrictions that Putin doesn’t have. They now have the capability of defending themselves on a more equal footing. Why would you or we have an issue with that?
-
I agree. Depending on who goes and who comes in of course, but we have the basis of a squad that should do well in the Championship (which is part of our problem now!).

I couldn’t find a general thread about the media so here we go. I left The Guardian 24 years ago but still keep in contact with a few friends and colleagues on a WhatsApp group. It is all kicking off at the moment because the Scott Trust want to sell The Observer and have lined up the sale to a start up business called Tortoise Media. The jounos and general staff are up in arms and a “mutiny” is on the cards. Seems a strange move as The Observer is a natural bedfellow for The Guardian and they have never had a Sunday title before they bought it. A number of big names have already jumped ship.

Why? Do you think that what P&O did was ok? I seem to remember plenty of Labour MPs kicking off about it at the time, including the current Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and why wouldn’t they? I also many derogatory remarks made by Labour MPs about Trump. -
All I can think of is that Archer didn’t expect the ball to come to him as the defender was skidding in to block it. He had milli seconds to react and couldn’t adjust himself quickly enough. Or perhaps I am being overly charitable and it was a Che Adams moment?

I think you have hit the nail on the head. The system is open to interpretation hence is often more grey than black and white. The fact that many people can look at the same situation and come up with different conclusions says it all. God knows what the answer is. There are still people arguing that Stokes was offside in 1976 so there will always be disagreements. The saddest thing is that the system brought in to help correct decision making easier seems to have had the opposite effect (along with the actual off side rules themselves).

You can try and take the moral high ground hypo but most of us have long memories. The alt-right avatar. “Thank god my wife isn’t a Muslim”. “socialism is dangerous.” I have lost count of the number of times you have immediately jumped all over my posts when I have criticised the likes of Tommy Robinson or Katie Hopkins (and then you pretended that you didn’t know who they are). You are and always have been a far right supporter/apologist even though you once said that you were “liberal”. You said earlier that I don’t believe what I say. Your opinions on here are the polar opposite to mine and yes, I do believe what I write. Fortunately there are a lot more people with liberal sensibilities posting in the Lounge now, but a few years ago the main noises were you and a few others with far right sympathies, so I was pretty much on my own. I notice that you finally stopped stalking me around the time I wasn’t one of the very few liberal posters. I have taken a lot of crap from you over the years and have given plenty back. Please don’t try and play the victim now.

It was on LBC. You can listen to it on catch up if you like.

Death related? I wasn’t wishing him dead so I don’t see how it is offensive. Less inappropriate than posting laughing emojis on posts about dead Palestinians?
-
This is what I took exception to. Where is the respect in these comments? “When” not “if”. As I have said before, only focussing on possible negatives that may or may not happen at some point in the future.
-
The reactions from the people who will benefit from this bill spoke volumes yesterday. More and more counties are moving in this direction. It is all about showing compassion and humanity and allowing people a choice. The focus on possible coercion is a side show. This isn’t going to affect most people anyway. I made my glib comment to hypo because you would think that this is eventually going to be all about getting rid of pesky sick people to read his comments. He posted that it was a sad day. Not to the people who think that this is a major step in the right direction and something that a progressive country should be doing it isn’t.
-
Really? You have been posting on here as long as I have. That is tame in comparison to what I have faced over the years from him and the group of people who think like him. And I have never called him a c**t. You may disagree with me, but constantly posting laughing emojis on posts about dead Palestinians is far worse than my comment.
-
Another dumb comment. Why would I think that anyone would delight in someone else dying in pain? Hypo made a remark about the scheme all falling apart in a few years and has, from the posts I have read, constantly focussed on the possible negatives. This bill gives people a proper choice at last. I really don’t understand why anyone would have a problem with others having that opportunity. Yes, it needs to be properly policed etc, but that is a separate issue and will be addressed I’m sure. Would you argue against the principle of individuals being allowed to die with dignity in certain circumstances?
-
In real time I thought Armstrong was offside. I think that the linesman flagged too.
-
As Brian Clough once famously said, if you aren’t interring with play, what are you doing on the pitch! You are quit right of course, if you are standing in front of the goal anywhere near the ball, you can’t help but be interfering. Which is precisely why the Arsenal goal should have been ruled out too.

She was right about P&O, but we can’t have government ministers telling us what they really think. Look at the trouble Lammy got himself into after saying what many people think about Trump! -
You really are a card. Go find the evidence that I loved it when Twitter banned Trump. You call other people loons but you make stuff up and then rail against it. I barely looked at Twitter and even less at X so I couldn’t give a monkeys about Trump being banned. In his case it is better than his rankings do get a wide audience because more people can see how deranged he is. For someone who says he doesn’t support Trump you spend an awful lot of time defending him. Calling others loony lefties does not detract from you being a blinkered conspiracy theorist nic. Little wonder that you spend so much time defending one of the worlds most prolific conspiracy theorists. With freedom of speech comes responsibility. If you think that either Trump or Musk use freedom of speech responsibly that also comes as no surprise. By the way, if you don’t like being called mental perhaps it isn’t wise to call others loons.
-
If it had been a cross and well over his head you could argue that, but he was in the middle of the goal and attempted to play the ball. I really don’t think we have anything to complain about other than the current offside rules are too open to interpretation.
-
I am not the one who posts laughing emojis on posts about the innocent Palestinians being butchered in Gaza and the West Bank. You really need to look at yourself hypo. You can call me all the names under the sun, but anyone reading your posts over the years can see you for what you are. You used to follow me around and respond to my every post within seconds and I am the troll? You really are a massive hypocrite. What is respectful in posting that this will all go pear shaped in a few years time? You clearly have issues with it which is your right, but the majority of the people in this country want it, so as you told me with Brexit, accept that this is what the majority want.
-
I don’t think that is the issue. Armstrong is in an offside position and makes an attempt to play the ball. That makes him interfering with play I assume. If a player is in the middle of the goal and the ball is played across him when he is in an offide position I don’t see how that isn’t interfering which is why I don’t understand why we conceded one like that this season. It’s all too complicated and open to interpretation now. We need to go back to the old days when a player is offside if he is beyond the last player when the ball is played forward.

There have been a lot of positive comments about what she has achieved so far and even some suggestions that she will get another high profile job eventually.
