iansums Posted 29 January, 2010 Share Posted 29 January, 2010 With all the transfer specualtion and of course the signings we have already made it's quite a task working out who is eligible to play in the cup competitions, but why? What I mean is why does a player have to be cup-tied, why does it matter if he has already played a cup game for a previous club? It seems to me yet another pointless rule in the game that has no good reason whatsoever. Or am I missing something?
Matthew Le God Posted 29 January, 2010 Share Posted 29 January, 2010 It was conceived during the times of no January transfer window in order to prevent a wealthy, still competing team from gaining an unfair advantage by signing talented players from clubs that may have lost out in earlier rounds. In an attempt to increase their cup chances. Now pointless really as the smaller transfer windows remove this.

Still it introduces new forms of discrimination - namely against lower league players who will have played in earlier rounds of the cup -in particular the FA cup- and the teams that buy them, also typically from the lower leagues. If you're a CCC or Prem player, you may not have even played a game when the Jan transfer window opens. The rule, so far from helping small teams, actually hinders them. It does seem that with the advent of the transfer windows this rule could be redundant now.
Toadhall Saint Posted 29 January, 2010 Share Posted 29 January, 2010 Never gave it much thought TBH. But it does seem somewhat out dated.

The idea that you can have a player playing for two sides in the same Cup competition beggars belief. Strangely enough it is a rule in every single cup competition in the world. I wonder why. Imagine what you would feel like having beaten Chelsea in Round 3 if bu&%ar me the same players don't turn up calling themselves Manchester United! You beat them again and now they have a go for Arsenal! Presumably by your reckoning they should be able to move around until finally they get to beat you! I think you'll find that the rule where you can only play for two clubs a season puts pay to that scenario. Cup-tied is a stupid rule IMO
Ponty Posted 29 January, 2010 Share Posted 29 January, 2010 TBH, there should be just the one transfer "window", in the close season.

John Boy Saint Posted 29 January, 2010 Share Posted 29 January, 2010 Shame it did not happen with managers, maybe Glenda would not have been out of the Saints management blocks quite so fast if the cup tied rule spread to managers. Still in the world of Glenda he payed the price of an indisgression in a previous life by getting knocked out by Arsenal in the semi final with Sperms..................... Maybe if he had pulled his head out of his backside he would have put Matty on second half at Tranmere and made it to the cup final with us. note to self don't post under the influence............ you ramble too much
