1965onwards Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 While we are enjoying a superior brand of football,it is a lot less effective that it should be because the lads have taken TOO MUCH on board from the coaches;no doubt over-grateful for the chance they have been given.A bit brainwashed i believe into passing too fast for the sake of it.Naive in fact. The average pass is also much too long.Consequently the team cannot keep up with the speed and distance of the passes, and we lose possession too easily because the player receiving the ball is stranded up field with too little,if any, support, and outnumbered. Total football is about a team moving quickly up,down, and around the pitch, with the ball passed at the appropriate speed in sync with the speed of the team as a whole. The team needs to step back and think for themselves a bit. They need to build up attacks with greater patience, and to pass only to players in clear space,or who can make a further immediate pass such as a 1-2 or playing in triangles. This will allow players to make shorter passes, which will be more accurate and easier to control, and thereby result in retaining a lot more possession. While the movement is a lot better than the statues of previous seasons,it is still nowhere near what it needs to be,especially around the box. At the moment, too often, players move away from the player with the ball, when they should be doing the opposite, and visa versa. Nothing i have seen so far convinces me that the lads understand sufficiently what they should be doing, and when and where. Coaches and players need to take on board that a more patient game will give the team a greater share of possession than they are achieving at the moment, with the benefit that the opponents will have less possession, with less pressure on our defence. A further consequence of a slower build up will be that the team will stay better connected, with more players being in a position to attack or defend at any given moment. More, easier possession, will also give the players more confidence, which is vital at the moment. The players and coaches need to spend a day just watching DVDs of Arsenal games. 60 yard crossfield balls look good, they rarely produce anything. 70's Mike Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 We actually look like a Tyro league side in as much as the passing etc works in training but then in a game the nasty opposition are trying to win and tackle and push etc.

It was the 30 yd intercepted or innaccurate ball that killed us last night. In the last 10 mins they needed to go patient and build up slowly, instead we were going long, losing possession, then having to win the ball back again. Weston Super Saint Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 We actually look like a Tyro league side in as much as the passing etc works in training but then in a game the nasty opposition are trying to win and tackle and push etc. To be fair the passing works during the game as well. The only problem is it's always around the centre spot, with the opposition sitting back and waiting for the inevitable f*ck up.
SPIKE Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 Your brand of football will only work in your deluded minds which Rupert has managed to brainwash. Keep looking up at POMPEY for a very very long time.

Loyal Saint Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 And won nothing, POMPEY have already won the FA Cup Your sugar daddy bought himself an FA Cup. P*mpey would be no longer if it wasn't for the dodgy cash of a couple of foreign sugar daddies and as such any hollow success you get is meaningless. rocknrollman no2 Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 I was surprise last night by the number of times we tried to pass the ball through the middle and when that didnt work, the ball was hoofed out to the wings, usually at a great height to the two feet high Dyer who couldnt jump more than three inches if his life depended on it. At times i lost count at the number of times we had passes intercepted. We must learn to hold on to the ball more.

positivepete Posted 19 September, 2008 Share Posted 19 September, 2008 The secret is to do with varying the pace of the play, and keeping possession. On Wednesday when Ipswich had the chance they defended with a bank of four defenders and a bank of five midfield players and no space in between. Then we had to be patient, keep possession, go back and start again, which we tried to do. We forced the pace when we broke from the back, and hit the longer passes to give us a chance to attack before Ipswich regained their shape. As you say Arsenal are masters at this varying their pace. Arsenal are better at home this season because they can now vary the pace during a phase of play, last season they could not and they also struggled at home. On Wednesday our two strategies did not always come off, and for a period in the second half we ran out of ideas. I said earlier this season that we may do better away from home as the season progresses, where the pace we have in the side this season will allow us to break more effectively. I know that I am enjoying watching the young lads who want to play for the shirt this season. We also have some experienced pros who want to help the youngsters, Wotton was outstanding on Wednesday, leading by example and encouraging and helping the younger players. He may have his best playing days behind him but he was a true leader out there.
ottery st mary Posted 19 September, 2008 Share Posted 19 September, 2008 Now fit and playing matches Wotton has to be in the side holding mid-field or Centre back. A match fit Svensson would help and together with Cork, Pekhart, Lallana, Spiderman and we have the makings of a good side.
