Badger Posted 8 July, 2010 Share Posted 8 July, 2010 There will be a lot of talk this weekend about an Englishman refereeing the WC final. In case anyone is previously unaware of it, the first Englishman to ref at this level was our former chairman George Reader. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Reader In my view this is another piece of great Saints history to remember to go with the Charlie Miller story. CityRanger Posted 8 July, 2010 Share Posted 8 July, 2010 Saints schoolboys u15s used to play an invitational game at the Dell each year for the George Reader Trophy. In our year we played Watford and won 3 1. Does anyone know if this still happens each season?

Give it to Ron Posted 9 July, 2010 Share Posted 9 July, 2010 Also the guy who is running the line Mike Mullarkey used to referee most of the Reserve matches at Staplewood only a couple of seasons ago. An amazing rise that one from reserve matches to lino in the WC.

Badger Posted 9 July, 2010 Author Share Posted 9 July, 2010 I didn't - is this true? I certainly recall having read this before, possibly in an interview with Peach shortly after he joined us or about the time of the 1976 Cup Final. I suspect David Coleman has been kicking himself since 1976 for not bringing that up.I am told his commentary just made references to Peach owning a Fishmongers in Lymington.(Not heard the commentary fully as I was at the match). Springhill Posted 10 July, 2010 Share Posted 10 July, 2010 Are we talking about the same school? I refer to the one at the end of Stafford Road which at the time was called Western District Infants School. I can assure you that George Reader was headmaster at the time I was there. Under Weststand Posted 10 July, 2010 Share Posted 10 July, 2010 I don't know what George Reader's association was with the borough Council in Lymington, but my dad was the local housing officer. He told him told my dad to get an autograph book as he new I was a budding Saints fan at the time. He was flying out late to a pre season tour with Saints. And he new that he was on the plane with the 1970 Chelsea FA cup winning team. So I got all that great Chelsea teams autographs & the Saints ones from that time too! Fabulous for a nine year old at the time. autograph book has now been passed onto my son. For that reason alone he will always be remembered fondly by me, he was a true Gentleman in every sense of the word & a true Saint
