spyinthesky Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 Anyone listen to Radio 5 Live yesterday? The Chairman of Oldham was on saying how difficult is was to keep going especially when surrounded by lots of Prem clubs. They even offered a £1 entrance fee for one game last season and were 2,000 short of their 11,500 capacity Apparently their playing budget is under £2m for the year compared to quote ...'Southampton at £8m or so...although this really reflects the fact that they average over 20,000 for their home games'... doddisalegend Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 It's not really a supprise, down in league one we're big fish (which I rather enjoy). The main thing I suppose is can we turn out finicial muscle (at least at this level) in to succsess on the pitch. A lack of debt and big crowds (for league one) give us a powerful advantage but at the same time money doesn't gurantee anything.

I do not believe there is any other club in any league with the financial advantage Saints have for winning the league anywhere. ManC are obviously spending far more, but the effect that has on the Premier and our effect on League 1 is not the same. I don't know of any club in this league that would not sell their best player if the price is right. With over the top pricing in this league still well affordable in comparison to the Premier. When you consider nigh on all the other clubs have debts to contend with, it makes it difficult to have a level playing field. With the vast majority of clubs living from hand to mouth, it's a surprise we still have so many competitive leagues. Peterborough are one team with a modest budget available, something that could well make them contenders.
david in sweden Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 (edited) Anyone listen to Radio 5 Live yesterday? No matter how well a team may play, if they don't have good support in the local area, you might as well say that they don't deserve to have a successful team, which after all is often down to a good manager who can create a good team out of nothing. Bournemouth...is a good example. We can assume that even with the -10 , the thing that cost us last season was the poor start with only one win in the first 10 (was it ?). Saints are extremely fortunate to have the owner they have, but it goes to show that even teams at this level need support from financiers ..as well as local fans. If a club is stuck with a capacity of (say) 10,000 ...they'll never grow beyond the income they can generate from ticket sales without major investment, and then they still need fans. Look at the problem at The Dell when we were forced to stick with a capacity of 15,000..! Without a season ticket the average fan was sunk...Oldham and the like will unfortunately have trouble surviving with small grounds ..even if they were promoted they still have only 11,500 seats. the saint in winchester Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 Yeah, it's regional - they are surrounded by bigger fish. They need to relocate to an area where their catchment would be greater. A look at the map would indicate where to base themselves. Milton Keynes is taken.
