doddisalegend Posted 28 October, 2010 Share Posted 28 October, 2010 (edited) Reading one of my match programes from early this season there was an interview with Alex where he said that he had always played central midfield for the youth side and was surprised to be put on the wing by AP in his first game something Nigel has continued with. Does anyone think it would be worth moving Alex back into the centre rather than playing on the wing? Maybe in a 4-5-1 with Hammond and Chaplow (to do the defensive stuff) with Adam and Punch on the wings and Lambert up front. or is playing on the wing the best use for Alex's talent? Thoughts? benjii Posted 28 October, 2010 Share Posted 28 October, 2010 No, no, no. Sub, coming on the wing if needed.
Smirking_Saint Posted 28 October, 2010 Share Posted 28 October, 2010 His pace, crossing, his direct ambition and his dribbling ability, for me speaks for itself and IMO is pretty much the attributes needed for an effective winger. Having not seen him do too much actually battling, plus the fact he is not very tall, i don't think he is made for a central midfielder role. For me anyways. I kind of agree in a 4-4-2 but playing behind the striker in a 4-5-1 I wonder if he'd be effective with his pace and dribbling ability. All so it's intresting to me that youth side considered him a centeral midfielder must have something about him in that role.

I don't doubt he has the ability as he looks bloody good but if we're going to play someone other than Guly behind the striker then I'd rather it was Lallana. Why change anything unnecessarily? Our current form is good and he can be a match winning impact player if needed.
bpsaint Posted 28 October, 2010 Share Posted 28 October, 2010 Each to their own but for me I'd rather he started on the wing instead of Punch.

Probably because of his age i guess, or because perhaps of other players and finding the best team ?? You don't really get to piece a team together in youth football, it is much more restricted to working with what you have. Personally i see him as a wide player, and an effective one, perhaps end up as a striker as he has an eye for goal. For me though no, i can't see him as a player to play in the hole as they don't really take people on, they find space and play pass and move. Lallana is more of a player to play in the hole, if we were to play 4-5-1 i would like to see Punch and Ox on the wings (there PREFERED WINGS, as they are not bloody Robben) with Adam behind Barnard or Rickie. I think that would work very well. Might be nice if we varied the team formations a bit more as well as most teams in this league must have a good idea of the way we set up and play by now (hudders certainly did). I have always liked 4-5-1 and 5-3-2/3-5-2 however you want to employ it. I thought we looked more dangerous last season playing 4-5-1 and definately have the players to suit it. I keep saying that the 4-5-1 formation is our true formation, we played so well last season with it beating teams like Huddersfield away from home unlike this season we play a 442 formation and lose. Move Lallana off the wing and make him play off the lone striker in somekind of free roaming role, that will work wonders imo. id love for us to try a 3-5-2 formation though, we got the CB's Harding and Richardson as wingbacks? morgan, chappers and lallana then gully+lambo very attacking football!! David Beckam started out playing central midfield, and has always claimed it was his best position!
