saintsfannick Posted 28 April, 2011 Share Posted 28 April, 2011 Hi, I am currently writing my dissertation on football hooliganism, and I have some questions that I would be very grateful if you guys could answer and post back on here, if you could spare the time to answer all or any of the questions it would be valuable to my project ! To what extent do you believe football hooliganism is still evident? Does hooliganism affect your match day experience? Research has indicated that football hooliganism is returning to a similar state to the problem days of the 1960’s and 70’s, do you agree with this statement? What in your opinion provokes football disorder? Does your perception of football hooliganism deter you from attending certain football matches? thesaint sfc Posted 28 April, 2011 Share Posted 28 April, 2011 (edited) I try to keep it going by *** ting someone at every game. Yes - often makes it more funny watching a couple of drunk football hoolies rolling around on the floor with the police piling on top of them. No I don't. Colinjb Posted 28 April, 2011 Share Posted 28 April, 2011 Ok, here we go. To what extent do you believe football hooliganism is still evident? I don't believe it is that evident at all, you would need to actively go looking for this kind of behaviour to even know it exists in modern times. Does hooliganism affect your match day experience? It doesn't effect it at all. Research has indicated that football hooliganism is returning to a similar state to the problem days of the 1960’s and 70’s, do you agree with this statement? It's difficult for me to really comment as I wasn't born until 1984, however I certainly do not feel that hooliganism is a problem at all, therefore I would have to say no. What in your opinion provokes football disorder? Local rivalries and history between clubs (and alcohol) seem to be the catalyst for dissorder. Does your perception of football hooliganism deter you from attending certain football matches? No. I go to support my team, have never directly encountered any hooliganism and as such do not give it a second thought.

Acetripper Posted 28 April, 2011 Share Posted 28 April, 2011 Okay here goes, from a Huddersfield Town perspective. To what extent do you believe football hooliganism is still evident? I think it bubbles under the surface and comes bursting out when the vital circumstances present themselves. Does hooliganism affect your match day experience? Not usually but every now again it's hard to ignore the threat or possibility it. Research has indicated that football hooliganism is returning to a similar state to the problem days of the 1960’s and 70’s, do you agree with this statement? I don't think it ever went away really! Late 1980's early 90's perhaps when the 'rave scene' was happening it quietened down noticeably but it's always there. What in your opinion provokes football disorder? People thinking it's okay to behave in an aggressive way in gangs regardless of who's around them. Usually fuelled by old rivalries or drinking alcohol. Does your perception of football hooliganism deter you from attending certain football matches? No. I don't like it but I reluctantly accept it goes with the territory. As do nights out in most of our major city centres unfortunately. AceT (HTFC)

Wilf Posted 28 April, 2011 Share Posted 28 April, 2011 To what extent do you believe football hooliganism is still evident? Hardly at all. Does hooliganism affect your match day experience? No. Research has indicated that football hooliganism is returning to a similar state to the problem days of the 1960’s and 70’s, do you agree with this statement? Absolutely not. In the 60s and 70s the disorder was in and around the grounds and on the terraces. Today all seater stadia, CCTV and more careful ticket sales mean that there is rarely mass disorder in the grounds. A couple of examples of disorder at the Dell in the early 70s: * significant numbers of Millwall fans in the ground when we played West Ham looking to fight their London rivals * A bunch of 50 Spurs fans on constant walkabout round the ground hitting people at random I struggle to see how any research could indicate anything similar happening these days What in your opinion provokes football disorder? Drink, gang mentallity, search for excitement... Does your perception of football hooliganism deter you from attending certain football matches? No

Huntingdon Posted 29 April, 2011 Share Posted 29 April, 2011 To what extent do you believe football hooliganism is still evident? I think there are problems en route to matches, and possibly afterwards. However, the media don't appear to want to sensationalise these things yet Does hooliganism affect your match day experience? No, not at present Research has indicated that football hooliganism is returning to a similar state to the problem days of the 1960’s and 70’s, do you agree with this statement? No, due to all seater stadiums, CCTV etc we won't see problems inside grounds as before. However, the Bury keeper being punched after a Chesterfield pitch invasion is a worrying sign What in your opinion provokes football disorder? Football hooliganism simply mirrors social problems & Thatcher was too arrogant to realise this. The late 70's & early 80's had serious riots in Brixton & Toxteth, football was just an extension of this social unrest. This is why we may see some kind of return to football violence. There's a lot of angry young men, who feel prospects are poor, they are angry at immigrants taking their jobs etc. Football is very tribal, so all these social problems could rear it's ugly head at matches in the coming years Does your perception of football hooliganism deter you from attending certain football matches? Not yet, but I might think twice about wearing a Saints shirt when travelling to an away match
