Jim Magilton has just been appointed as new coach of Melbourne Victory.

remember Alan Ball signing him ( during in his brief managerial spell with us) 1994 in the early Premiership days.

A good tough midfielder who won 19 caps for N.Ireland whilst with us, but was eventually transferred out (by Dave Jones 1997) after 148 Saints games, and eventually went onto even better times with Ipswich. Seems to have been less successful as a manager !

I thought he left as he was refusing to sign a new contract??? Not sure of Bosman was around at that time??

I always liked him when we signed him, remember a winner at home to Arsenal in a 1-0 win the day that Grobbelar played in goal after all the bribery allegations. Think he scored away at Arsenal that season as well in 1-1 draw.

Decent enough player for us at that time

Just seen him on fox sports here , he looks like he's had a few pies and is already talkin ********, reckon he and Kevin muscat will have a very public fall out before long. Still it's nice to hear 'bozza' Bosnich talking about saints.

Never saw him play, but that's all I've ever heard said about him, he could only pass sideways.

Funny really, because if someone like Schneiderlin or Cork were put into the team that Magilton was put into, fans would probably reach the same blinkered conclusion.

Magilton was a footballer in a team that didn't really play football. He looked to keep possession whilst the rest of the were ****-or-bust, throw the ball forward or defend for your lives. Of course that was partly down to management too, but Magilton's reputation amongst some fans was entirely unfair thanks mainly to the rest of the team at the time.

All that said, I did chuckle at the 'sideways move' comment. :)
