Can you settle an argument for me please?

I've no idea but it would be a start if the authorities clamped down on the modified modern vehicles first. Surely there must be a law against changing a perfectly quiet exhaust system to make it sound like loud enough to detract from the minute size of their genitalia?

Do noise pollution regulations apply to classic cars?

Near to us is a man who owns a very old Chevrolet (I'd say probably 50s / early 60s) It's a beautiful car but very, very noisy - like it has a hole in the exhaust.

Is that legal or is the car exempt because of its age?

Don't know if its legal or not, but there is no reason for an old car to be noisy. Some older models like the Morris 1000 used to resonate a bit on over run but I always put that down to the very narrow tail pipes fitted as standard and the way it was suspended on those cars. It may be that the car mentioned has been fitted with a made up exhaust due to lack of spares, the trouble is that designing an exhaust system is quite a difficult and precise undertaking and home made ones are rarely as efficient and as quiet as the original.

If its a 1950s /60s American car and noisy the chance are that its been deliberately modified as a street rod (ie built for show to mates and clubs) and has a straight through exhaust (ie no sound deadening baffles). Its illegal, but as to whether you can get anyone to do anything about it...... Phone up the local police station and see if you have a beat copper, and get them to have a word. I used to have a Chevrolet Bel Air and it was very quiet apart from a low rumble from the engine.

I think it's down to the discretion of the MOT tester and/or policeman if you get pulled over. I know they pull motorbikes for loud exhausts but don't do them for the noise but for the fact it hasn't got an 'e' stamp.

This. As a motorcyclist (with a standard, legal exhaust) it grips my sh** that Hants Constabulary spend every spring and summer weekend pulling over every bike in the county to check exhausts and number plate sizes yet seemingly do nothing about the local chavs in their noisy Corsas, fake drift cars etc. I used to live on the A272 just where it comes into Petersfield and noisy cars (especially late at night) were far more of a nuisance than bikes. :x

As to BTF's neighbour's car, I expect Handyman is right and that it probably has a made-up exhaust as the originals are no longer available. Don't know what the solution to that would be...

I would think that the only answer would be another carefully made up exhaust. I have NO idea what it should look like but if it is a car with a largish engine perhaps something like the exhaust on the old Rover Coupe or 3 litre might do if able to make fit. I just happen to have a few new/old stock exhaust boxes including the Rover ones which I would gladly donate to the cause. They have a bit of surface rust but have never been used. They would certainly quieten the engine down. By the way BTF you know me, thanks again for the stairlift. Just for general interest I have one or two original mini ones, and old fords like the 105e and i think a couple of old vauxhall ones as well, but of course these would be too small for the old car BTF is talking about. The bits that might do would not go straight on but would need someone that is handy with an oxyacetylene torch for perhaps resetting bends and making connections. but it might not be that bad to do, not having seen the car(underneath) I am just quoting the worst case scenario.
