Thedelldays Posted 28 June, 2012 Share Posted 28 June, 2012 just seen in the paper that there are plans to have a London F1 GP. the track will go along the thames, up through west end, past buck palace, around st James park, past the Ritz and down the thames again by the London Eye would be the the most expensive/prestigious race in the world and would bring in at the very least £100m over the weekend would be pretty cool, no..? Gorgiesaint Posted 28 June, 2012 Share Posted 28 June, 2012 That has been mooted for a couple of years now... I thought all of the talk now was of a track round the Olympic Park? Can't see the Queen being too chuffed at being woken up for Saturday morning practice by two dozen rather loud F1 cars!
pedg Posted 28 June, 2012 Share Posted 28 June, 2012 It has been suggested that the fact this has come out now may well be related to the fact that Gerhard Gribkowsky has just been jailed in Germany for taking £44 million in bribes from Bernie E and Bernie is looking at a way of deflecting attention. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financial-crime/9360292/German-banker-Gerhard-Gribkowsky-who-took-bribes-over-F1-sale-jailed.html
Hatch Posted 29 June, 2012 Share Posted 29 June, 2012 While it would look terrific on the telly, I can't see how they would get paying spectators in, not the hundreds of thousands that they would want anyway. Plus, closing Central London for a week, not really going to happen is it?
suewhistle Posted 30 June, 2012 Share Posted 30 June, 2012 It's Bernie trying to change the subject... Even in Monaco where they're used to it it takes a deal more than a week to set up and a week to dismantle. Nah!

Lighthouse Posted 30 June, 2012 Share Posted 30 June, 2012 I think it would be sh*t. Once the novelty of seeing F1 cars driving down the Mall wears off, it will just be another crap street circuit like Valencia, Monaco or Singapore. All tight, narrow, angled corners with little chance for overtaking. As for the race going spectators, it would be a complete nightmare. 200,000 people decending on London with half the roads closed would be a nightmare. I've been to Silverstone, that was gridlocked chaos driving out after the race and that's a purpose built race circuit, surrounded by dual carriage ways in the middle of nowhere. Even once you get there, actual viewing spots will be pretty limited with very little space for a decent sized grandstand. Silverstone is fine, appart from the fact Bernie isn't getting enough money from them, which means it will probably end up on the scrap heap along with Spa and half the other decent racing circuits. Gorgiesaint Posted 30 June, 2012 Share Posted 30 June, 2012 they open the roads at night...in valencia apparently... Most of the roads used in Valencia are so quiet that you can walk down the middle of where the circuit is and not get bothered by traffic. There are a few that need to be closed that have a bit of traffic but because it's situated by the America's Cup harbour its manageable. It's not like its in the centre of town like Monaco.
