Saint in Paradise Posted 23 July, 2013 Share Posted 23 July, 2013 Renowned German code-breaker Karsten Nohl, who uncovered a design flaw in around 750 million SIM cards around the world leaving them vulnerable to hack attacks, told RT that phone users are helpless against hackers. “SIM cards were the last widely-used [piece of] technology left that no one had broken yet,” said Nohl, who made headlines on Sunday saying that his team found a flaw that would allow hackers to remotely access personal data and authorize illegal transactions within minutes. The UN’s International Telecommunications Union called the evidence “significant” and is to send an alert to all mobile phone operators warning of what was revealed. The bug affects the SIM card, the plastic circuit board that contains key phone user data, which is considered to be the most-secure part of the phone, and has not been hacked in a similar fashion in a decade. By finding out the unique encryption key of each SIM card with just one hidden text message, Nohl is able to get complete remote control of an individual’s phone. Ken Tone Posted 24 July, 2013 Share Posted 24 July, 2013 Personally I wouldn't dream of using my mobile for any financial transaction or purchase, or indeed anything that gave access to more than my emails at worst. Using an i-phone for example to access your bank account or for this 'proximity payment' they are pushing now, is asking for trouble IMO. Not that even my approach is totally secure of course. Someone could use my email to, for example, try to get my bank to send login details as if I'd forgotten them. But chances are a hacker will go for an easier target first. dubai_phil Posted 24 July, 2013 Share Posted 24 July, 2013 Have Printed Circuit Boards really become Plastic Circuit Boards? Surface Mounted Electronic Components on Printed Conductor tracks on plastic were proven to be viable back in the early 1980's a UK company led the way in trying to Production Engineer them for Pagers at that time. They have moved on a long way since then and so yes.
