hutch Posted 6 March, 2014 Share Posted 6 March, 2014 ...particularly those in the Middle East. I've been using Overplay VPN for about a year now, in SA (the African one not the Arab one) and more recently in Kuwait. Until yesterday that is, as it has now been blacklisted by ZAIN. I use it mainly for streaming BBC iPlayer and Sky (using my UK account details). Question is are people around here using VPN technology and if so which one? I don't mind paying for a decent service. Overplay is costing me $10 a month. Ta

Overplay is costing me $10 a month. Ta Used to use a VPN (HotSpot Shield) but then the guys here got wise to it and they sent out some kind of "virus" that searched for it. If you had it installed it would keep crashing your machine. Took a while for the Jungle Drums to work out we had to wipe the entire stuff off the computer. The Corporate style VPN's work fine in most countries here. Main issue here is controlling the content on the internet via the Proxy servers. Go back 20 years and there was no internet full stop. The Proxies are used to 1) Annoy us expats 2) Stop "Unsavoury content" such as Porn 3) Track "Unsavoury Posters on Social Media" 4) Block extremist web sites. There are ways that work here I'll try and get some more info for you. I just gave up it really wasn't worth the hassle for a non-Geek as the game keeps changing Edited 6 March, 2014 by dubai_phil
norwaysaint Posted 6 March, 2014 Share Posted 6 March, 2014 Would Media Hint help with this? It's an extension for Chrome or Firefox that we use to make iPlayer work and it also changes our Netflix so we can access stuff only meant for the US. i don't know how it works, but it's by far the most effortless version of these things that I've used, you just add it to Chrome and never have to think about it again. It'll certainly get you iPlayer, don't know about Sky.
hutch Posted 6 March, 2014 Author Share Posted 6 March, 2014 I need something to work "outside the browser", to make the BBC iplayer and media player android apps believe that I'm in the UK. As I said I don't mind paying. I would probably prefer to pay rather than use a free one. Router-based would be ideal, but device-based is OK. You need to pay for connection to a proxy server (the only worthwhile reliable solution imo). thesaint sfc Posted 18 March, 2014 Share Posted 18 March, 2014 I use Express VPN which seems to cost about the same amount. Last time I was in Dubai it worked fine. They have amazing support too for a $10 service. If you aren't sure if it will work etc you can use live chat on their website and they'll answer any questions within about 3 seconds. thesaint sfc Posted 18 March, 2014 Share Posted 18 March, 2014 Oh and with Express VPN its just a bit of software. You just install it and enter a key - much more straight forward imo.
thesaint sfc Posted 18 March, 2014 Share Posted 18 March, 2014 Oh and you will get to use the same software as me which should make you feel special.
LVSaint Posted 18 March, 2014 Share Posted 18 March, 2014 Anyone using the free Hola add on for Firefox or chrome? Works v well.
Minty Posted 18 March, 2014 Share Posted 18 March, 2014 I realise I'm not an expat and not outside these shores, but I use Unotelly so I can watch BeInSports... have you looked at that?
norwaysaint Posted 18 March, 2014 Share Posted 18 March, 2014 Anyone using the free Hola add on for Firefox or chrome? Works v well. Yes, I use that. I've been using it instead of media hint lately, as there was some issue with Netflix redirecting. It's better too, as media hint allows iplayer and automatically puts you onto US Netflix, whereas hola allows you to choose Netflix from any country.
