CB Fry Posted 26 December, 2008 Share Posted 26 December, 2008 Funnily enough I'm not sure that a comprehensive critique of Stuart Gray's reign as Southampton manager eight years ago is not really at the forefront of many Saints fans' minds at present. What are you expecting people to say? We have the worst team in our entire history, one of the most pathetic managerial appointments in British football history and a flood of excuses and garbage dribbling out from Lowe, Portalowe and their "but we're the most potless team, like, ever" apologists. Portalowe out today. Lowe out today. There was a threadbare team put out by a club with no cash, no decent infrastructure, no reliable income streams and a manager with limited experience in this division. The team was a combination of kids, loans and old hands, with barely a transfer fee paid for the entire squad. The club is in debt and is over spending at present. And the club has sold every single player of worth over the last three years or so, with those players making up a formidable team if they'd stayed. The name of that club? Here's a clue. They won two nil today against a shower of sh it.

1965onwards Posted 26 December, 2008 Share Posted 26 December, 2008 Wigley and Gray are frequently mentioned as examples of Lowes stupidity, alongside his stupidity of appointing JP. Branfoot has been mentioned a lot this week in the context of protests necessary to try to save our club. Merrington managed us for one season in the prem.and kept us up. um pahars Posted 26 December, 2008 Share Posted 26 December, 2008 People can't have it both ways. If Jan is doing a poor job then you're clearly stating you feel we have a squad far better than their position suggests. Or, if you feel the squad is near its appropriate position, then you can't criticise Jan. So which is it? But I think they can. Firstly they can criticise him for not getting the best out of the squad he currently has. His poor team selections, his lack of strategies, his fixation with Total Football, his lack of motivation, his inexperience etc etc etc. Secondly they can criticise him for the squad he has acquired. He has brought in something like 12 players, so he has not just had to work with an existing squad. Financial constraints will of course play a part with regards who he can keep and who he can bring in, but there can be no doubting that there was a sizeable degree of latitude with reagrds building up a squad that should have been strong enough not to be in this position. Whichever way you want to look at it, i think Poortvliet has been found wanting!!!!
team-saint Posted 26 December, 2008 Share Posted 26 December, 2008 For the 117th time, Poortvliet has a poor squad. What kind of moron would compare that to managers in the premier league with far better squads, far more resources and a completely different league??? People can't have it both ways. If Jan is doing a poor job then you're clearly stating you feel we have a squad far better than their position suggests. Or, if you feel the squad is near its appropriate position, then you can't criticise Jan. So which is it? I completely disagree that we have a poor squad because I think that because of a terrible season last season our estimation of what the players are actually capable of has gone down a lot. We've got rid of all of the **** players from last season and have lost 3 of the best in Safri, Davies and John but our squad is still not too bad when you look at the best team we can put out. In a good team with a real manager some of them would look very good. At the moment because of having a clueless manager only a few of them look above very average. There is hardly any real quality in this division and it's tactics, organisation and hard work which make a team successful in this division. This is why if you have a player who is really very good then they will find it easy. Remember how Theo used to skip past fatty brick ****house defenders. With the right guidance Lallana and even McGoldrick could actually be very useful. The reason we have struggled to score goals at home and recently away is that we don't get to the byline to cross, we don't play with proper wingers to do this, and when the ball goes into the box no-one is attacking it, no-one is making a run and mcgoldrick is being marked by 3 defenders. If we worked on the basic principle of getting the ball to the wing, getting the full back to overlap then putting in a cross, having 2 strikers running in one to the back post and one to the front post plus a midfield player running in from the edge of the box towards the penalty spot then we would score loads more goals. If you have great finishers they would probably put away more chances but even a combination of McGoldrick and Robertson would score plenty. The reason we are not attacking with any purpose like this is not because of the players, it is because of the manager. Why can't he see this? If he can see it then why doesn't he change the formation and practise attacking effectively on the training ground. The players can take some responsibility. Sometimes, for example at Chelsea under Grant (in my opinion), great players can have enough quality to win games without a good manager. Overall though, the role of a manager is still underated by many football fans. Hull's squad is hardly worthy of 7th in the Premiership on paper and yet they deserve to be there. I am being quite unrealistic in wanting a manager who can do so much, there are only a few managers in the world who are really superb managers, but if Fergie was our manager we would be top of this league even if he had the same resources as Jan. Plymouth had such an average side today, we should have destroyed them but we were tactically inept and therefore lost without giving anything very good to salvage some pride. It's hopeless at the moment and unless Jan goes or changes the tactics then we will lose every remaining game this season. The return of Lee Holmes is a big boost, and Saganowski will give us an experienced goalscorer even if he didn't do it last season. Ryan Smith on the right doesn't work because he has to cut inside so Thomson or BWP is the obvious choice there and Dyer will give another option when he returns. If Jan goes and we get a proper manager then we will stay up. For what it's worth (nothing ) we would have been comfortably mid-table by now if we kept NP. Under Pearson we gradually improved and by the end of the season had some excellent form, with the exception of the Burnley game, home wins against Bristol C (top at the time), Sheff Utd (6 wins in a row or something), and away draws at West Brom (top at the time) and Charlton were all excellent results. There is no reason that this season we would not have continued that good form.

hamster Posted 26 December, 2008 Share Posted 26 December, 2008 If Jan goes and we get a proper manager then we will stay up. Not sure about that t-s. The squad needs investment and time to settle PLUS a new strong manager to lead them out of the mire. IMO None of this can or will happen now. For what it's worth (nothing ) we would have been comfortably mid-table by now if we kept NP. Again, I am not so sure about this part. If Nigel Pearson had stayed, with the chance to make the most of last seasons squad, I think we would have been pushing for those prized play off places. If Lowe had stayed away, the crowds would have definitely been higher than they are now, leaving a few quid available for investment in January, and given us a final push into the automatic spots.
