There's another article about Delap's long throw-ins (on the BBC Football site).

But they focus on his use of them when he was with Stoke City. Here's one of their quotes: "Delap's arrow-like long throws were iconic - and terrifying."

When he used them regularly at Southampton, I don't recall them being either "iconic" [hate that lazy use of the word] or "terrifying".

In fact, I don't recall them achieving much of anything. Or do I remember them incorrectly?

He always had a long throw but they were slow and looping when he was with us and it was mostly seen as a bit of a novelty. It did work for us occasionally, such as in the 2-2 draw against Everton in 2005.

At Stoke he had the idea (or someone coached him - not Pulis) to launch them fast and flat with backspin. That's when they became iconic.

What makes you think it wasn't Pulis? He's claimed himself that after seeing Delaps long throws on the training ground he asked him specifically to put them in the box that way (and towards the near post).

I groaned inwardly every time Delap took a throw. Hopelessly ineffective, predictable, and so slow time stood still. Invariably easily cleared by the oppo defence and turned over.

Yes I recall being a bit annoyed that he tried to do them for years for us with terrible and predictable outcomes, then suddenly he leaves and it's the biggest threat in all the kingdoms of all the world and universe. Luckily we had Salisu to take over some years later.

Have we ever had a good taker of long throws?

Because Delap changed his technique after he left us. In the interview that you're probably referring to, Pulis describes learning of him throwing it like a bullet, launched low and fast. That was key to their successful use and not what he did with us, or with Sunderland.

Perhaps he decided on his own that it was better to sacrifice a little extra distance for pace.
