Would you have kept Licka or Ostlund?

Hypothetical question. Assuming they would have taken a new contract on relatively low wages (Jesus PAYP with his injuries), do you think we should have kept them?

I would say yes. Licka, whilst found wanting physically, could pick out a decent pass and set up 4 or 5 goals in about 10 games under Pearson. Ostlund may have the possitional sense of marmot on LSD, but an experienced, passionate RIGHT BACK FFS.

Is that Wright's nightmare performance or Licka's non performance....

After all the stuff I've said, I sometimes worry that Jermaine is coming to get me. Really, really slowly.

I'd argue that Licka was far more effective that Smith, Gobern and, in the last 3 months, Lallana. Surman, Euell and Gillett haven't exactly had rave reviews either.

When you consider goalshy perenial DMG was kept out of the team by the great Vincent Pericard last season, I reckon we could have found a place for Mario and Jesus.

Agree with sh*te about Ifil too. Quality player for us.

I'd of kept Wright. His positional play improved massivey at right back as the season progressed. He had no pace but he made up for it by being in the right place. James does not. Also Wright's passing was very good IMO. He hardly ever pounted it down the line. James' passing is not too bad either mind you. Wright also didn't do too badly as a central midfielder. OK so he was no world beater but at least he could control a football and pass ten yards, something Wotton struggles with.

Ostlund and Licka? No thanks.

I would have kept Licka and not signed Schneiderlin, use the money saved to pay Pearson and Saga's wages.

I wouldn't have kept Ostlund, he was alright but I think James is a decent enough right back, one of our most under rated players. Gets a lot of stick just because he's apparently playing out of position but he's been improving all season and always tries.

He certainly has been improving in recent times, but you can't get away from the fact that he is still pretty damn slow and absolutely terrible in the air, both of which makes him a liability defensively.

Would have kept Ostlund. Never as bad as he was made out to be.

Mind you, Phil Ifil was the one we should deffo have kept. he looked like he'd be a really good player

I agree. Do you think Lowe would have made sure we'd have signed him if he was in charge at the time? Seems a Lowe kind of buy - young player with plenty of potential for raising transfer profit.

The only way any Saints player is considered good on here is after they left.

Ostlund, Wright & Licka were all part of the squad that took us to the brink of relegation last season so no. They may not be much worse than what we currently have, but tey are certainly no better

Perhaps better checking the league table before leaping to such conclusions. DMG, Surman, Lallana, Saga, Perry and Davis were all part of that squad too. Don't know about you, but I'm kind of glad we kept the last three.

Anyway, with the summer mass exodus that went on, it wouldn't have taken a genius to see that a few of the bit part players might have been useful if we'd kept them.

Also people seem to be forgetting Wright turned down a new contract offer in summer. Think it was because we offered him 1 year and he wanted 2. Better than Wotton, possibly, but I can't imagine how slow a 36 year old Wright would have been.

No.

I would have kept Stern and Rasiak though....

Wouldn't we all.I was refering to players we realistically could have kept given Lowe's financial restrictions on the club.
