Kelvin Davis Appreciation

Don't think I can remember a keeper who has divided the fanbase like this guy. Personally I've stuck up for him since he came here. I've always thought he was a damn good keeper, and had it not been for that year at Sunderland he would still be in the prem somewhere. ( although I admit to saying a few words about him after THAT goal against QPR;) ).

However I think this season he has been nothing short of magnificent, both in playing terms and in attitude. Being captain is never easy for a keeper but he has stuck at it with the added pressure it brings and for me is probably the only player who can come out of this season with his head held high. He has also won over the supporters who were calling for him to be dropped so vociferously. I'm guessing there is no way he will still be here next season (if there is a next season) and will hopefully end up in the premiership, as thats where he belongs.

Cheers Super Kelv, all the best mate.

The one and only candidate for our 'Player of the Season' award.

He has been first class this season and but for his heroics in goal, we would be relegated already.

I've not always been his biggest fan, but he's been superb for us on the whole.

If we had 11 players out on the pitch every Saturday with his attitude, then we wouldn't be in the position we're in now.

I hope he finds himself a decent club where he will be really appreciated next season.

absolutely appalling today. His kicking was laughable

We are all intitled to an off day from time to time. Peter Chech (Spelling?) is currently having a bit of a mare at Chelsea at the moment.

Nature of the beast. Cut the guy some slack - as if it were not for him we would have been down weeks ago.

Forever the optimist.

Any reason for your positivity? Genuine question.

Well, Kelvin isnt a great keeper IMHO and he knows it. He also has never had such hero status. At Sunderland he was ridiculed and also under GB lost his confidence further. He now has status and respect and the Captain's armband.

I also think that any new manager knows he will have to rebuild a team FROM THE BACK. That starts with Davis and his retention as the priority for ANY new manager.

I think Kelvin genuinely is enjoying playing at Southampton. I think he has developed a love for the Club.

Whats more I chat to him when he leaves and gauge his opinion. Over the years, I have honestly seen him swell into a decent, confident man, at Saints and I believe he GENUINELY wants to stay. I think he'd be happy in League 1 next season righting a wrong and pushing for promotion under a new manager.

He'll have to move on thereafter if we fail to promote, but I would not rush into waving KD off yet. He's a bit like Crouch... made in Southampton. But unlike Crouch Liverpool arent going to come knocking.

New manager, new owners with money and ambition and a new spirit amongst the fans now developing (regardless of the demoralised and poorly led and uninspired by Wotte outfield players)... I think KD simply loves the Club that's turned him into a confident keeper.

So let's work to keep him... he's a confidence player is Kelvin. Our best player.

I will never forgive for costing us promotion in 2007, he must have lost us a good 10 points in **** ups and poor leadership in the defence. I must admit he has been one of our better players since that season, but he was shocking yesterday.

All keepers will find it hard to follow niemi, because he set the standard- v high

Good points you put across in fairness, and I genuinely hope you're right! I'd love Davis to stay, but won't hold my breath.

You do get the impression that Kelvin really enjoys playing for Southampton, and on the odd occasion I've spoken to him, he always mentions how he likes living down south.

Maybe he would be willing to spend a season in League One (on a lower wage) trying to help us get back to 'where we belong' as it were. As club captain, he seems to have taken responsibility and thrived in his new role.

Fingers crossed he does remain a Saint. Would give me a bit of belief going into next season too. The prospect of Forecast, Bialkowski and Poke fighting for the number 1 spot doesn't inspire me with confidence . . .

Would love to read this thread alongside the one after last seasons game at Wednesday! His distribution was typically awful today and he should not be wearing the captains armband ad he is unable to influence the team where it matters.

I thought he was dire in his first season. No doubt lost confidence after the sunderland relegation mess.

He was better but still dodgy at times, very dodgy in his second season, and IMO if Richard Wright hadn't come in we'd have been down.

Then this season, he's been very, very good. However, being so busy behind a **** defence, I think a keeper does get the chance to show their shot stopping ability. So I don't suddenly think he's brilliant, he still has weaknesses, mainly decision making, but his shot stopping has been excellent. The main thing I've liked has been his attitude though. He's wanted to stay, wanted to do well and shown he cares while others clearly don't. For that reason i'd love him to stay.

He's a pretty good CCC keeper, but no more than that. He'd get a move if he wanted it, but if he does love it here and would accept reduced wages, i'd love him to stay. if not, i hope Bart seizes the chance to rediscover some form next season. he'd need the fans behind him though as he's still young and learning. shame he's lost his way as he showed excellent potential at times.

Agree 100%.

agreed a good man. met him after the WBA game last season as the team were getting back on the bus. asked him if we were going to stay up. he acually grabbed me and siad course we ******* are! and he wasnt even in the side at the time. without him we would have been down much earlier and having apparently donated a weeks wages see him as the only committed non mercenary in this side. not surprised if he didnt sound that up for it v wednesday seeing the 10 in front of him never did.

he is probably the best in the division, is and has been a very good keeper at this level
